Job Description

Position Overview:

AECOM is seeking a Mid-Level Fisheries/Natural Resource Scientist for a career opportunity in our Northeast U.S. Environmental Planning & Permitting Practice. The ideal candidate for this position would have strong working knowledge of a wide variety of ecosystems with a focus on aquatic systems. As a Fisheries and Natural Resources Scientist at AECOM, you will play a critical role in conducting aquatic ecosystem assessments, supporting regulatory permitting efforts, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have experience in fisheries biology, aquatic ecology, and environmental permitting, with strong technical writing skills and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights. Key Responsibilities: 

Conduct field assessments, data collection, and analysis related to fisheries biology, aquatic ecosystems, wetland ecosystems, and water quality.Lead and support the development of studies and monitoring programs for fish populations, habitat assessments, and restoration initiatives.Health and safety stewardship, including local field visitsAssist with wetland delineations, functional assessments, and/or species assessments following federal and state regulatory guidelines.Prepare high-quality technical reports, environmental impact analyses, and regulatory permit applications for projects subject to regulations such as: NEPA, the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and other state and local regulations.Collaborate with regulatory agencies, clients, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and project requirements.Provide technical expertise and strategic input on ecological restoration, conservation planning, and environmental mitigation strategies.Utilize data analysis tools to support environmental assessments and reporting.Participate in business development efforts by contributing to proposals and client presentations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

BA/BS +4 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and / or education.Bachelor’s degree in fisheries biology, aquatic ecology, environmental science, or other natural resources field. Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.Due to the nature of this role, US citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in fisheries biology, aquatic ecology, environmental science, or other natural resources field.In-depth knowledge of aquatic ecosystems, fish species, and habitat restoration techniques.Experience with environmental permitting, including NEPA, CWA, ESA, and state & local regulatory processes.Familiarity with GIS mapping and advanced data analysis toolsSCUBA certificationAbility to work in various field conditions, with overnight travel as required for project needs.Ability and interest to work on a wide variety of natural resource projects.Proficiency in technical writing and analysis, with the ability to develop clear and concise reports and permit applications.Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with clients, stakeholders, and team members.
