Summary This position is located at the Gym and Fitness Center which is part of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department. Incumbent serves as a Fitness instructor, personal trainer or group fitness instructor and may perform one or a combination of the following functions within the Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Support Program Branch: Group Exercise, Command Fitness Leader (CFL), Outreach, and Fitness Enhancement Program (FEP) Outreach. Responsibilities The incumbent will screen participants for cardiovascular risk factors prior to exercise via a comprehensive medical history and health habits questionnaire. (Refers high-risk patrons to supervisor). Instructs and demonstrates proper biomechanic technique for use of all resistance training and cardiovascular exercise equipment. Explains applicable kinesiology of each machine. Shows patrons how to properly monitor heart rate while exercising and provides patrons with the knowledge of basic kinesiology as it relates to resistance training machines and free weight equipment. Demonstrates and explains the importance of warm-up, cool-down and flexibility. Assists with the operation of the Fitness facility and policy in accordance with MWR regulations and instructions. Issues workout charts and other additional paperwork. Responsible for upkeep of records (personal training financial transactions, daily activity reports, client records and health risk forms and records, etc.) Performs a variety of housekeeping chores (wipes off exercise equipment daily, dusts and vacuums personal training room as needed, helps with daily towel washing, etc.). Custodial duties include outside areas of facilities also. Opens and closes facility when necessary. Implements principles and behaviors of effective customer service. Provides or distributes information to patrons concerning the program, facilities or activity. Performs facility and equipment inspections and implements actions to comply with health and safety requirements. Coordinates facility uses by individuals, groups or organizations and ensures the distribution of resources to meet the needs and requirements of authorized patrons. Ensures compliance with facility or program operating policies and procedures. Maintains records of facility use, program participation, incident reports and other factors relating to documenting the operations involved in the facility or program. Prepares input for requisitioning supplies and equipment to meet the need of the operation. Performs functions relating to resale activities to include cash handling, supply and inventory control, retail accountability, cost control etc. Assists in conducting recreation activities or events. Operates recreation equipment to conduct activities or provide services. Supervises up to four (4) junior fitness assistants and fitness instructor under the functional title of "head trainer". May perform other duties as assigned. Practical knowledge of Exercise Science, Physical Fitness or related field. Knowledge of basic cardiovascular risk factors, weight loss and nutritional habits, proper biomechanic techniques. Skill in instruction and proper use of exercise equipment. Ability to handle emergency situations. Must possess a valid CPR and First Aid card. Ability to maintain records and reports. Ability to deal effectively with others. Capability to follow verbal and written instructions. Skill to take blood pressure readings Ability to take body fat measurements in accordance with Navy policy.
