Position Title:  Flagstaff Area National Monuments Traditional Trades Individual Placement  – AmeriCorps

Conservation Legacy Program: Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps 

Site Location: Flagstaff Area National Monuments (Wupatki, Sunset Crater and Walnut Canyon National Monument)

Start Date: 04/21/2025 End Date: 10/17/2025 AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 900 hour

 

Purpose:

It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to "lead our nations back to cultural and ecological well being." The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has offices in Acoma, Albuquerque, Gallup (Navajo Nation), Zuni, and Hopi. Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps serves local Indigenous communities in the regions we operate. 

 

The National Park Service (NPS) and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) at Flagstaff Area National Monuments. These AmeriCorps position(s) will receive introductory training in preservation masonry and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This AmeriCorps program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

 

The intern will be working within the Cultural Resources Program and the Facilities Maintenance Division of the Flagstaff Area National Monuments. Flagstaff Area National Monuments manages three units within the National Park Service around Flagstaff, Arizona: Wupatki National Monument, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, and Walnut Canyon National Monument. The Cultural Resources Program is responsible for the stewardship of archeological sites, cultural landscapes, historic structures, and ethnographic resources. The Facilities Maintenance Division provides access to cultural and natural resources by maintaining trails, roads, buildings, and public utilities.  

 

The interns will benefit the organization (NPS) by incorporating an Indigenous perspective in a program that focuses on preserving and providing access to ancestral sites. The NPS is also working to increase the diversity of its applicant pool, particularly with Native American applicants. This experience will provide the intern with skills and experience to apply and qualify for NPS jobs, which will ultimately help the organization by including Native Americans among the staff tasked with preserving and protecting cultural resources.

 

 

Description of Duties:

Perform preservation maintenance at pre-contact archeological sites.
Essential functions and responsibilities:
        i. Work as part of a crew to perform stabilization at sites within Wupatki NM and Walnut Canyon NM.
        ii. Complete and track forms and photographs to document preservation work.
        iii. Assist with report preparation.Work Plan Activity: Lomaki Trail ADA Realignment

Essential functions and responsibilities:
       i. Work with trail crew to shape limestone with hand chisels and install stone along trail.
       ii. Lay down aggregate base subgrade to specified depth and compact with powered tamper.
       iii. Spread Stalok proprietary trail surface to required grade using rakes and levels, and compact.

3. Ranger Cabin Preservation
    Essential functions and responsibilities:
        i. Work as part of a crew to perform stabilization at the historic Ranger Cabin alongside the Flagstaff MAT.
        ii. Prepare and apply lime daub and chinking to exterior of cabin.
        iii. Paint exterior of outhouse with linseed oil paint.
        iv. Monitor rodent activity and mitigate as needed.
        vi. Perform minor maintenance and repairs to doors, windows, and hardware.

 

Qualifications:

United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien At least 17 years of age Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.Valid Driver's LicensePositive Attitude Ability to work 10 hour days in heat and sunAbility to hike rough, uneven terrain,Willingness to learn and work as part of a teamAbility to follow oral and written instructionsNo prior experience to Historic Preservation needed

Time Requirements: 

Typically, this position is expected to serve 4/21/2025 to 10/17/2025, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

 

Orientation and Training:

Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities. Member will receive an orientation on Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps Individual Placement Program - responsibilities and requirements of the program.Member will receive training with the National Park Service (NPS) - Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) on basic fundamental principles of Historic PreservationMember will receive training on Defensive Driving via Conservation LegacyMember has $1,000 to utilize for professional development opportunities.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and Monthly IP accomplishment tracking, TTAP surveys and Midterm/Final Evaluations.
