Automotive/diesel technician training at an accredited technical school preferred.Experience Qualifications: Twelve years experience as an automotive/diesel technician with five years as a supervisor in a large vehicle maintenance/repair shop required.Skills Qualifications: Ability to issue and follow oral and written instructions; ability to research technical publications in hard copy and on the web; knowledge of motor vehicle parts, materials, tools, hazards, and safety procedures; knowledge of handling and disposal of hazardous wastes; ability to use vehicle maintenance software, diagnostic software, and computerized test equipment; ability to use hand tools, power tools, fluid dispensing equipment, jacks, and hoists; ability to use welding and flame-cutting equipment; ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions on automotive/truck/bus equipment powered by diesel and gasoline engines, electric motors, and alternative fuels; ability to lead and supervise employees in the design and operation of preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and inspection programs; ability to train employees to conduct maintenance programs; ability to communicate orally and in writing with subordinates, peers, supervisors, customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders; and computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.Primary Responsibilities: Plan, coordinate, control, and evaluate the daily operations of multiple fleet maintenance facilities including resource management, personnel management, and customer relations for the Fleet Maintenance Department.1. Manage shop operations, resources, and facilities for the Fleet Maintenance Department.a. Supervise subordinates in the conduct of Preventive Maintenance (PM), Corrective Maintenance (CM), and safety inspection programs.b. Plan PM and CM work for subordinates and assign tasks as required.c. Coordinate availability of parts, tools, and other resources required to accomplish projects.d. Monitor technician work to ensure timely and accurate completion.e. Monitor labor productivity and materials usage and report results to the Fleet Manager.f. Monitor scheduling of outsourced work and quality of work performed by vendors and outsourced contractors and inform outsourced contract coordinator of problems with vendor/contractor performance.g. Ensure all mechanical repairs are performed in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and buses/vehicles are properly maintained and in safe operating condition.h. Keep track of work performed and supplies/repair parts used according to established procedures.i. Assure that service trucks are properly maintained and stocked with repair parts, hand tools, and special tools.j. Analyze vehicle malfunctions to identify patterns and trends and develop corrective actions.k. Ensure safe vehicle operations in and around shop facilities.l. Report facility deficiencies to building maintenance and follow up to ensure prompt resolution.m. Maintain shop lifts and other equipment in safe operating condition.2. Supervise PM and CM services and safety inspections to insure they are performed according to established standards.a. Review operator complaints and vehicle maintenance history as appropriate.b. Assist with advanced diagnosis to accomplish repair and/or rebuild actions as required.3. Research technical manuals, service bulletins and instructions, equipment diagrams, and parts catalogs in hard copy and on the web.a. Locate and follow recommended service, diagnostic, repair, installation, removal, and safety procedures.b. Ensure subordinates have access to technical publications and follow manufacturer recommend procedures while performing maintenance.c. Determine replacement and substitute parts needed to perform repairs.4. Meet readiness goals, productivity goals, and other organizational goals and objectives.a. Provide emphasis on the preventive maintenance program to reduce breakdowns and out-of-service inspection results.b. Monitor status of deadlined vehicles and take action to return vehicles to service as expeditiously as possible.c. Monitor maintenance status and condition of spare vehicles.d. Monitor issues and returns of spare buses so that shops maintain sufficient spares availability to meet operational needs.e. Coordinate with transportation supervisors on bus assignments, spares utilization, and adherence to service and inspection schedules.f. Monitor shop labor scheduling and utilization and take necessary actions to achieve and maintain established productivity goals.5. Provide hands on vehicle maintenance tasks as needed.a. Provide and maintain personal technician tool chest and hand tools.b. Assume responsibility for equipment, tools, and materials issued for working on motor vehicles.c. Obtain and maintain an adequate inventory of serviceable technician provided hand tools as determined by the Fleet Manager.d. Maintain and account for all special tools, parts, supplies, and equipment issued to employees.e. Clean and store tools promptly after use and ensure shop bays are cleaned periodically.f. Ensure subordinates maintain accountability for tools and equipment issued and maintain cleanliness standards for shop tools, equipment, and facilities.6. Supervise and train automotive/diesel technicians and contract technicians.a. Plan work schedules, direct actions, and evaluate results of work performed by subordinates.b. Conduct training for subordinates and document the accomplishments.7. Cooperate with and maintain a positive working relationship with all other district personnel and those outside the district.a. Maintain open communications with customers to assist in determining maintenance requirements and to explain maintenance services and repairs performed on vehicles.b. Maintain positive working relationships with other employees to promote teamwork and mutual support.c. Maintain positive working relationships with suppliers to enhance the quality of services and commodities provided and to foster open communication to resolve problems quickly and fairly.8. Improve automotive/diesel service technician skills and abilities through in-service training and certification.a. Complete formal training courses, with satisfactory status, as assigned by management.b. Maintain ASE Master Technician certification in a related vehicle maintenance/repair series.c. Identify in-service and certification training requirements for subordinates, develop implementation plans, and monitor and update plans as required.9. Be on call for necessary work 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.10. Perform other duties as assigned.
