A diverse, qualified, and engaged talent base is the key to our success. **Summary** The Fleet & Reliability Engineer is responsible for carrying out engineering tasks related to modification and repair projects. In this multifaceted role, the engineer is also accountable for conducting reliability life-data analysis, applying statistical techniques to predict lifespan, identify failure trends, and recommend enhancements to optimize and sustain benchmark reliability. This position involves independent research into new design or manufacturing applications and improved techniques and requires a comprehensive understanding of regulatory requirements for product design, modifications, repairs, and customer utilization. **Duties and Responsibilities** _To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the following essential duties satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned to address business needs and changing business practices._ + Trains in accordance with job responsibilities and applicable specifications. + Prepares working plans, detailed drawings and complete mechanical drawings and layouts of components and assemblies such as schematics, interconnect lists and parts breakdowns from notes, verbal instructions and rough or detailed sketches. + Creates scope of work for modifications, in-service repairs, and warranty repairs of tank and freight rail cars. + Prepares stress analysis and reports as required. + Reviews product design plans to ensure accuracy of plans and compliance to design specifications. + Performs technical calculations, selects, and specifies tolerances, materials, components, etc. as required in the product design. + Uses CAD equipment and software to develop designs or revise designs. + Utilizes part numbering and drawing numbering system and prepare material list. + Works closely with suppliers to approve their product's application to our design. + Works closely with customers to determine their product requirements, improve reliability, product loading or unloading, handling, etc. + Assists Reliability Engineering with data source integration and analysis of tank and freight car maintenance data. + Utilizes reliability software tools to analyze and report on life data and reliability. + Prepares detailed reports and presentations for engineering and management teams to communicate reliability findings and recommendations. + Designs and implements test plans for new and existing products + Guides the work of designers as required, to complete the drawing package. + Becomes knowledgeable of the AAR and FRA regulatory requirements that impact the design of the product. + Functionally directs designers on assigned projects. + Assists in training of designers and engineers as directed. **Qualifications** _The following generally describes requirements to successfully perform the assigned duties._ **Minimum Qualifications** + Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), or similar engineering degree + 3 years of relevant experience or 10 years equivalent experience + CAD drafting and design, time management, and accuracy skills + Ability to create designs that are functional, durable, and cost efficient + Ability to collaborate and communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing, at all levels of the organization **Preferred Qualifications** + Knowledge and understanding of rail car systems, components, steel structure and steel fabrication + Knowledge and understanding of reliability engineering, life-data analysis, or data analytics **Work Environment and Physical Requirements** **Work Environment** _The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
