Job Description Summary“Licensed Nursing Staff with competency in one (1) of the departments listed: Medical- Surgical Services, Behavioral Health Services.

Performs nursing care activities for individuals in the Medical/Surgical Services (e.g. 2 East, 3East, 4 East, 5 East, 6 East, 7 East), and Adult Behavioral Medicine Unit.

Actively accepts, understands, and practices appropriate standards of nursing practice. Contributes to the nursing assessment of the patient. Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. Actively supports the mission, vision, and values of the hospital and department. Performs various activities related to the needs of adult and geriatric patients in accordance with the hospital’s established policies and procedures and the Alabama Board of Nursing.
Job Description

Essential Functions

Assists the registered nurse in data collection to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care to the medical/surgical and psychiatric patient.Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.Performs various activities related to the needs of adult and geriatric patients in accordance with the hospital’s established policies and procedures and the Alabama Board of Nursing.Actively accepts, understands, and practices appropriate standards of medical/surgical and psychiatric nursing.Contributes to the nursing assessment of the patient.Documents accurate and factual information on all records.With appropriate guidance from the registered nurse, communicates accurate and appropriate information about the patient care plan to the patient, family, and other health care staff.Applies effective interviewing skills to elicit information from the patient and/or family that is necessary to plan, implement, and evaluate care.Exercises sound clinical judgment and critical thinking in all aspects of the nursing process and unit activities; develops creative solutions to problems.Participates in the development, documentation, validation, and revision of the plan of care for assigned patients that is consistent with current patient needs and the plan of care for the patient.Reports promptly any critical or unusual situations.Responds to patient and non-patient emergencies according to Southeast Health’s policies and procedures, as well as job requirements.Work actively and cooperatively with co-workers as a team.Seeks resources for direction when necessary.Actively supports the mission, vision, and values of the hospital and department.Performs other duties as requested by primary manager that do not compromise moral code of conduct or protocols set in place for patient or employee safety.Supervised PositionsNone

Qualifications

Minimum Education RequiredGraduate of an accredited school of nursing.Current LPN license in the State of Alabama.Minimum Education PreferredCompletion of an undergraduate degree.Minimum Experience RequiredFor Medical-Surgical Services, two (2) years of hospital LPN experience;For Behavioral Medicine Unit, one (1) or more years of psychiatric nursing;Current ACLS certification.Minimum Experience PreferredTwo (2) or more years in healthcare experience.

Required Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

Maintain current State of Alabama LPN licensure.Maintain current ACLS certification.Successful course completion in Basic Cardiac Life Support.Successful course completion of institutional basic EKG course (interpretation of life-threatening dysrhythmias).Annual completion of “Unit Specific” Competency requirements as delineated in unit specific competency tool.Must show initiative and ability to function independently.Demonstrates an understanding of being a team member.Demonstrates a positive attitude, ability, and actions to adapt to changes in work/work flow.Demonstrates job related skills in a safe, appropriate, effective, and timely manner.Demonstrates appropriate utilization of the skills of the License Practical Nurse as approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing.Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized, and function appropriately under stressful situations.Demonstrates the ability to perform all exams in the department; has taken the initiative to insure one’s own competency with each exam.Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served.   Interprets data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provides appropriate care based on these needs.Demonstrates effective time management techniques.Demonstrates appropriate utilization of supplies.Recognizes and employs team efforts to achieve departmental/organizational goals.Encourages and promotes positive behaviors in coworkers.Demonstrates ability to work with patients, families, visitors, and co-workers regardless of race, gender, disease process, life-style, religious or cultural beliefs.Considers the climate that is conductive to sharing information with the patient, family, and health care staff, including the following:The timing and environment for interaction.Behaviors indicating readiness to communicate.Nonjudgmental acceptance of the patient and family.Must be able to read, write, and speak English.Respect and caring demonstrated in words, action, and body language to all patients and hospital staff.Works cooperatively and collaboratively within and between departments to provide quality service to patients.Experience in operating personal computers, including operation of computer software in a Windows environment.Customer service oriented.Annual completion of competency requirements.CPR.Person in this position is required to understand, agree upon and follow our Six Ground Rules:No excuses.We are a team.Bring up your ideas.Poor performance will be addressed.‘That’s not my job’ is not acceptableManage Up.
