Formulation Sr. Scientist (Coatings and Corrosion)

Axalta Coating Systems is seeking an experienced Senior Scientist to join the Formulation Technology R&D team and lead product development programs.  This assignment will be located at Axalta’s new Global Innovation Center (GIC) in Philadelphia, PA.   This role is responsible for developing new coatings with an emphasis on corrosion prevention for the transportation and industrial markets.  As such the formulator should be familiar with ingredients used in paints and how these ingredients are manipulated to achieve desired properties.  The person in this role will support formulation programs with significant interactions with raw material suppliers, resin synthesis experts, and application specialists.

   

Key Responsibilities:

Manage formulation programs and related R&D projects.Lead project teams that build new product platforms and formulating practices using innovative materials that are developed internally and/or through external partners.Translate customer wants and product performance gaps into technical product specifications. Define critical tests to relate coating properties to end use performance criteria.Summarize and present findings to management and external customers.Responsible to understand and expand IP estate using innovation.

Key Qualifications:

Ideal candidate will possess an advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science; at least 7 years of hands-on technical experience in corrosion in coatings.Knowledge of corrosion and corrosion control in coatingsUnderstanding of corrosion fundamentals.  Experience with electrochemical methods to evaluate corrosion.Demonstrates practical use of common test methods to evaluate corrosion in the field.The successful candidate will have formulated solventborne /or waterborne coatings including primers, and is adept at utilizing experimental designs and statistical tools to drive decision making.Management/supervisory experience leading a technical team is a plus.An understanding of spraying, printing, and other coating application processes.Capability to adapt to rapidly evolving market with loosely defined objectives.Excellent written & oral communication skills to internal and customer audiences.Project management and experience with Stage-Gate process.Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills. Share Axalta’s values of integrity, critical thinking, effort, and efficiency.Candidate must have a working proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.Willingness and ability to travel (<10% of working time).Stay abreast of application technology innovations with emphasis on state-of-the-art corrosion prevention in coatings.
