Position Description
The Asset Management Systems Unit, lacks adequate resources to effectively support several small applications written in legacy languages for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Through the Legacy Application Modernization Program (LAMP), these applications will be consolidated and rewritten using standard technology or in part, replaced by purchased, vendor provided software. Contractual employees currently maintain these applications since no SOM employee has the necessary skillset. Contracts are coming to an end soon and the modernization effort is not yet scheduled to begin. This modernization effort will span a few years and thus the legacy application needs to be maintained for continuity of the business. This position will maintain many applications considered critical for receiving federal funds. Required skills include extensive experience writing in Visual FoxPro 9 (VFP) as well as earlier versions, interfacing with an Oracle database, direct customer support and system troubleshooting for inhouse developed and Customized Off the Shelf (COTS) software, data transformations and strong facilitation skills. Additional experience in .NET development is desirable.
Skills Required
The candidate must meet the basic qualifications of 10 or more years of generic IT experience as defined for an Application/Software Engineer 3. In addition, this position requires a concentration in Visual FoxPro development. Points will be determined from review of the experience section NOT from the “Summary” area of a resume. a. 10 years of recent experience developing applications using FoxPro with at least 5 years using Visual Foxpro 9 b. 10 years in troubleshooting software and hardware within a given network architecture c. 10 years as a meeting facilitator to collaboratively develop process models, data flow diagrams and specifications for application changes d. 2 years recent experience using ESRI software to access an ORACLE or SQLServer geodatabase e. 2 years developing .NET applications using Visual Studio 2205 or 2008 f. 2 years in supporting customized off the shelf (COTS) software, install upgrades and train business users
Experience Required
Application/Software Engineer capabilities with 10 or more years of experience, relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals, performs a variety of complicated tasks, may lead and direct the work of others, may report directly to a project lead or manager, a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. The resource needs strong Visual FoxPro 9 work experience gathering requirements, designing solutions, coding, testing and deploying revised applications. Excellent communication and facilitation skills are required. Knowledge of state transportation functions is most desirable. This position will report directly to the IT Manager.
