Fraud Prevention & Detection Associate

Our NPI team is growing, and we are seeking top talent to join our policy support vertical. A career as a fraud prevention and detection analyst is your opportunity to safeguard our clients from emerging fraud schemes and threats. Using advanced analytics, innovative thinking and investigative excellence, the successful candidate will complete several daily tasks, largely focusing on detection and prevention of fraud and abuse. The candidate will be involved in identifying suspected fraud and supporting appropriate actions to mitigate the risk to the organization, while remaining solutions oriented, and outcome focused.

This position requires strong technical understanding of the P&C industry and will support Aviva’s Personal Insurance business from an underwriting and fraud perspective. The role is key to supporting business leaders as well as working directly with the front-line underwriting staff & our partners, fostering a positive and dynamic work environment that values people and achieves outperforming results. In addition, the ideal candidate will stay updated on the latest trends and technologies to combat fraud more effectively and efficiently.

What you'll do:

Monitor and analyze information from detection systems, tools, reports, or manual sources to evaluate, investigate, and determine necessary actions.

Establish investigation strategy, gather, and analyze facts, order appropriate searches, correctly utilize investigative vendors where required, conduct interviews through recorded statements, manage case file, and ensure proper documentation of physical evidence.

Support the collection of evidence and information for multiple purposes including investigation and disposition, managing case files, litigation and criminal prosecution, management information and statistics, and process improvements.

Conduct over the phone interviews with relevant parties, such as brokers, insureds, and witnesses.

Determine when an investigation is ready for disposition and build a defendable case.

Prepare for and participate in Decision Panel meetings, as required.

Prioritize investigations based on capacity and benefit to the company and customers.

Provide guidance and technical expertise to agents, underwriters, and other underwriting staff.

Participate in the development, ongoing evaluation, and enhancements to investigative indicator technology.

Liaise with premium management, Aviva verify, claims, underwriting, compliance, business development and legal teams.

Monitor investigation capabilities of underwriting staff and implement appropriate interventions where necessary to enhance fraud detection and investigation capabilities.

Develop and deliver learning interventions (e.g., huddles, workshops, one-on-one coaching, etc.), relating to investigation, fraud awareness, detection, and prevention.

Evaluate evidence on an ongoing basis until the validity of the issue in question can be determined. Establish and maintain fraud-related policies and procedures to ensure compliance with policies and regulations.

Remain current with industry developments and emerging fraud trends to continuously improve fraud detection processes.

Policy Handling

Ensure prompt and equitable underwriting in accordance with corporate procedures and legislation to reach a timely resolution.

Effectively advise and counsel underwriting staff; provide prompt and exemplary customer service while keeping related parties informed.

What you'll bring:

Minimum 5 years of experience underwriting automobile and/or property policies, including specialization in handling deceitful policyholders, claimants, and other difficult actors.

Post-secondary education – insurance/investigation related preferred.

Strong technical knowledge specific to personal insurance line of business.

Highly organized individual with a capability to prioritize tasks on an on-going basis.

Investigative or litigation background preferred.

Strong understanding of underwriting and claims processes.

Ability and high comfort level to take a detailed and informative recorded, telephone or in-person statements from the insured and/or involved witnesses.

Superior analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Leadership abilities, coaching and team-building skills and ability to take accountability for all aspects of the role.

Strong knowledge of relevant provincial legislation.

Aptitude for learning and development initiatives.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including presentation skills.

Strong customer service skills – ability to communicate diplomatically and empathetically throughout the investigation process.

Assertive and comfortable with challenge and ambiguity.

Ability to diffuse/de-escalate combative situations.

Strong technical knowledge of automobile policies and applicable Statutory Conditions and related legislation.

Strong analytical skills with a great attention to detail and the ability and focus to determine the direction of an investigation, while keeping timelines as an ongoing priority.

The ability to make confident and objective decisions in high-stakes situations.

CIP designation or working towards CIP preferred.

Bilingual (French/English) skills are an asset.

What you’ll get:

The salary band for this position ranges from $64,200 to $119,200. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
