Programme Overview

British International Investment (BII) is the UK’s development finance institution, owned by the UK Government. BII invest with the aim of solving the biggest global development challenges by investing patient, flexible capital to support private sector growth and innovation. BII has over 70 years of experience successfully supporting the sustainable, long-term growth of businesses in Africa and Asia, and have recently expanded to invest in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean.

BII invest s to achieve impact and a financial return which is then reinvested for more impact. Over the past five years, BII have committed almost £7 billion of new investments, with net assets growing in value to approximately £7.5 billion. BII are now invested in 1,200 businesses which directly employ over 900,000 workers and support many more. Over the next five years, BII plan to grow further, and aim to commit around £9 billion of new investments over the period.

FSG Plus is a three-year Technical Assistance Facility, which is helping BII’s Financial Services Group to address the two pressing priorities of Financial Inclusion and Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability. The Facility delivers Technical Assistance (TA) combined with Research and Events to promote sustained practice changes in financial services providers. FSG Plus is helping investees demonstrate the business case for financial services through three types of practice change: (a) new or improved products; (b) new markets or segments; and (c) enhanced processes or systems.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the FSG Plus team in the second year of delivery. In Year 2, FSG Plus will build upon the diverse and comprehensive pipeline that was started in Year 1. The Technical Lead will be fully embedded within BII and work alongside the Deal Teams and Impact Group Teams. Through this role the successful candidate will have exposure to BII investments and portfolio companies, as well as opportunities to lead on collaboration with other development finance institutions.

FSG Plus, running from July 2021 to June 2024 has been contracted to DAI Global UK who act as an extension of BII Plus, the BII’s technical assistance facility.

 

Summary of Position

 

DAI is looking for a Technical Lead to join and lead its FSG Plus team, driving the design and implementation of the Facility portfolio. This is a role for a dynamic and capable individual to take full ownership of the FSG Plus strategy and work alongside BII to deliver it. The Technical Lead will have the experience and ability to lead the development of meaningful TA and R&E projects which aim to make a lasting difference to the lives of target populations in its markets and to make a positive impact on the planet.

 

The position requires excellent leadership skills combined with a technical background working with public or private financial institutions, ideally in the priority areas of climate and inclusion. The Technical Lead will be required to play an overall strategic, management and client liaison role within the FSG Plus team.

 

 

Key Roles and Responsibilities Provide strategic leadership to a portfolio of advisory mandates with financial institutions in BII’s portfolio Lead and face of senior stakeholder engagement and representation of FSG Plus Design high quality advisory projects Accountability for the delivery of results Provide technical support to Technical Assistance Providers/investees Support cross project learning activities to share lessons across BII and externally

 

 

Technical Requirements Demonstrable experience of dealing with financial institutions in developing countries of Africa and Asia, with evidenced experience in similar roles in the public/private financial institution sector; Ability to develop technical assistance interventions that respond to the needs of BII investees, and to contextualise the practical TA solutions to the economic and political contexts, the priorities and principles of BII and BII Plus, all the while understanding the incentives of stakeholders and opportunities for engagement; Experience of working with or within public/private financial institutions is required, as well as a working knowledge of International Financial Institutions (IFIs); experience of developing blended finance solutions Experience in managing small research teams and/or research projects and external consultants; Practical experience with some or all of the various elements of climate change, gender, green credit lines, green bonds, high-impact MSME; Experience with editing and quality assurance of technical notes and related materials.
