Your role:

CBC News is looking for a full-stack developer to join our News Labs team.

We’re a team of developers, designers and journalists that builds engaging, high-impact, visual and interactive experiences to serve digital audiences across Canada and the world.

You’re a highly technical person who enjoys continuously learning and experimenting to improve on technical solutions. You are extremely organized and comfortable structuring and maintaining your code to high standards. Your ideas feed into our development strategies as we execute digital projects with an emphasis on elections. You thrive working both collaboratively and independently under the pressure and deadlines of high-stakes news projects. You’re also comfortable within the complexities of a large digital publisher, using established site-wide standards and systems. 

You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture. 

In this role, you will:

Build, test and deploy creative ways to bring election coverage to Canadians, as well as tell digital stories with an emphasis on mobile presentation.

Work with designers and editorial stakeholders to build stories in new formats that engage mobile audiences. 

Investigate and test new technologies that could enhance newsroom research and audience facing builds. 

Write clean code so others can pick up where you left off.

Estimate the effort and time required for implementation of products with a significant degree of accuracy as deadlines are often fixed.

Perform thorough testing and QA and accessibility checks, fixing bugs as required.

Work well independently and with colleagues. 

Offer and accept critique respectfully, constructively and graciously.

Performs, as necessary, other duties related to this position, including outside regular office hours as some projects may require.

Qualifications:

4+ years relevant experience as a web developer. 

Experience in back-end development or system administration with a knowledge of PHP and SQL. Experience with Docker is a plus. 

Comfortable with the command line. 

Solid understanding of development best practices.

Able to ingest, process and output API’s & integrate them with front-end code.

Expertise with modern Javascript/Typescript frontend (react/svelte).

Expertise with modern CSS and writing accessible frontend code.

Familiarity with design tools such as Figma.

Knowledge and understanding of accessibility principles.

Knowledge around web mapping technology (PMTiles, map styles and working with map data) is an asset.

Experience with version control systems (git) and release management is an asset.

Superb communication skills and ability to translate design and editorial requirements to a technical solution.

Ability to write clear documentation is an asset.

Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Accuracy and attention to detail are essential. A passion for design and pixels is a plus.

Boundless curiosity and a drive to solve problems and think up new ways of presenting data and telling stories online.

Strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.
