Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The mission of the Division of Student Success is to collaborate with the university community to deliver targeted, impactful services that enhance the recruitment, retention, and graduation of a diverse student population. Dedicated to fostering student success, the division provides leadership, guidance, and transitional support designed to equip students with the tools and resources they need from their first day on campus to the moment they receive their diploma, ensuring comprehensive support throughout the entire student lifecycle. This division includes the offices of University Advising, New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, Academic Support Programs, and Educational Opportunity Programs such as TRiO Student Support Services and McNair Scholars.

As part of the Division of Student Success, University Advising (UA) coordinates comprehensive academic advising and retention support for all undergraduate students. Advising plays a pivotal role in student success by providing guidance in course selection and academic planning and supporting students’ personal, educational, and professional goals. Departments and initiatives within University Advising include the Students First Office, Transfer Initiatives, Starfish EARLY Alert, Academic Appeals, and FYE 101.

The FYE 101 team coordinates first-year support through the delivery and instruction of FYE 101: Succeed at the G – a 3-credit hour, general education course (called MAC for Minerva Academic Curriculum) designed to help students successfully transition to academic and student life at UNCG. In FYE 101, students will learn to identify and use campus resources, develop goals and plans related to personal purpose and interests, and build connections with peers, faculty, and staff at the University. Position Summary Reporting to the Director of First Year Experience, the FYE Specialist works primarily with the FYE 101: Succeed at the G (new student transition seminar) course. FYE 101 is designed to help new students transition successfully to academic and student life at UNC Greensboro. It is included as a general education course option to fulfill the MAC Foundations competency requirement . As part of the FYE team, FYE specialists contribute to the instruction, curriculum development, and the design of initiatives that support the academic success and retention of UNCG’s first-year students. Percentage Of Time 60% Key Responsibility Course Instruction Essential Tasks Teach up to 4 sections of FYE 101 each fall and spring term. Develop section-specific syllabus, Canvas course site(s), and course materials where appropriate. Plan and lead FYE 101 lessons, discussions, and learning activities. Grade course assignments and assessments. Use the Starfish: EARLY ALERT platform to notify academic advisors and academic support professionals when students need additional support. Support assigned Peer Academic Leaders (PAL) in co-facilitating discussions and learning activities during class time.
