Summary The primary purpose of the position is to provide proper care and maintenance for lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees. The incumbent will perform this gardener work based upon seasonal schedules or project plans for the area, suitability of the weather, degree of moisture in the soil, and the stage of plant growth. Responsibilities The incumbent will provide proper care and maintenance of established landscapes that include, but is not limited to; park lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees by mowing, weed-eating, trimming/pruning hedges and shrubs, edge lawns. etc. The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to; transplanting trees, determining quantities of plants, seeds, and other materials needed for proper preparation and growth; select/spray areas with approved herbicides, fungicides and insecticides to control plant diseases as well as maintain areas with appropriate fertilization methods to ensure healthy growth, have knowledge of plant and gardening procedures and standard methods of use, and technical knowledge of chemicals and amounts for proper use, and possess knowledge of the use of farm-type equipment with attachments as well as hand and power equipment used to maintain landscapes. Have knowledge of and ability to do routine maintenance such as checking oil levels, water levels, lights, tires, lubricating the equipment, checking and replenishing fluids to proper levels and other related equipment. Other duties include safe operation of field-type tractors over uneven ground such as open fields, banks, ditches, lawns, hills, and roadsides; connect various attachments such as blades, harrows, trailers, and brush hogs. Have applied pesticides, fertilizers on lawns and have pruned trees, shrubs, and hedges on properties. Possess or are able to obtain a valid state driver's license prior to entry of duty. Physical Demands: The work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending, and stooping. The incumbent occasionally climbs ladders to prune or trim vegetation and lifts heavy objects such as bags of fertilizer, grass seed, etc. Working Conditions: The work is done outside or in a greenhouse. In working outside, the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the sun, and sometimes in chilly or rainy weather. On a regular basis the conditions will involve working in air contaminated with chemical dust and sprays being applied to trees and shrubs. The incumbent will be required to wear protective clothing during pesticide/herbicide application; as well as normal safety items such as gloves, boots, glasses, etc. Because of the duties performed there is the chance of minor injuries such as bruises, cuts, and scrapes and occasional possibility of broken bones from falls. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected.
