General Laboratory Supervisor

We are searching for a General Laboratory Supervisor to supervise the daily activities of the Wilmington General Laboratory to include Medical Laboratory Scientists I and II (MLSs I and II) and Specimen Processing Caregivers (Receiving Clerks and Tech IIIs) daily to ensure the safe, accurate and timely performance of cost-effective laboratory testing. This position is Day Shift, and occasional weekend or holiday coverage as needed.

Qualifications:

BS, Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science.

Minimum of three (3) years clinical medical technology/laboratory science

Minimum of one-year supervisory experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

(ASCP) or equivalent

Principal duties and responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Laboratory Section Manager, monitors workflow and makes appropriate changes to ensure the delivery of quality laboratory services and effective utilization of caregivers to meet committed turnaround times.

Develops schedules and daily work assignments to ensure effective utilization of caregivers.  In conjunction with Christiana Hospital laboratory supervisors, ensures coverage during all hours. 

Communicates pertinent laboratory information to laboratory caregivers, in conjunction with section manager, technical specialists, and Christiana Hospital laboratory managers/supervisors.  Evaluates caregivers of the section in accordance with defined standards of performance with input from technical specialists and MLS IIs.

Implements and monitors appropriate safety precautions and addresses all safety-related issues.  Ensures all safety-related training is completed.

Performs coachings and disciplinary actions as necessary under direction of section manager.

Holds regular staff meetings as directed by section manager, setting agendas in conjunction with section manager.

Supports manager and timekeeper by reviewing time and attendance to verify hours worked and submits for approval.  Assists with resolution of any payroll-related problems.

Reviews and validates abnormal laboratory test results, assessing plausibility of results through correlation of data with common physiological conditions.  Consults with Technical Specialists and Clinical Biochemist as needed.

Investigates all Report2Learn, Patient and Physician complaints.

Assists in updating and writing procedures.  Researches new procedures under Section Manager, Section Chiefs, Technical Specialists and Clinical Biochemist.

Reviews quality control data and consults with respective technical specialists, clinical biochemist, section chiefs and QC coordinators on any unacceptable trends.  Maintains and monitors a comprehensive quality control program for reagents and equipment.  Assures that QC is documented properly, and corrective actions are appropriate.

Manages section in the absence of the section manager.
