ChristianaCare is recruiting for a General Laboratory Supervisor at the Union Hospital location. Hours for this position are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with rotating weekends and holidays.
In this position, you will oversee the daily activities of the Union Hospital General Laboratory to include Medical Laboratory Scientists I and II (MLSs I and II) and Specimen Processing Caregivers (Receiving Clerks and Tech IIIs) daily to ensure the safe, accurate and timely performance of cost-effective laboratory testing. With the assistance of the Medical Director and the Administrative Director, to be responsible for Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Quality Improvement in their assigned area(s).
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Monitor workflows and make appropriate changes to ensure the delivery of quality laboratory services and effective utilization of caregivers to meet committed turnaround times
Develop schedules and daily work assignments to ensure effective utilization of caregivers. In conjunction with Christiana Hospital laboratory supervisors, ensures coverage during all hours.
Communicate pertinent laboratory information to laboratory caregivers, in conjunction with section manager, technical specialists, and Christiana Hospital laboratory managers/supervisors. Evaluates caregivers of the section in accordance with defined standards of performance with input from technical specialists and MLS IIs.
Implement and monitor appropriate safety precautions and address all safety-related issues. Ensure all safety-related training is completed.
Perform coaching and disciplinary actions as necessary under direction of section manager.
Hold regular staff meetings as directed by section manager, setting agendas in conjunction with section manager.
Support manager and timekeeper by reviewing time and attendance to verify hours worked and submits for approval. Assist with resolution of any payroll-related problems.
Review and validate abnormal laboratory test results, assessing plausibility of results through correlation of data with common physiological conditions. Consult with Technical Specialists and Clinical Biochemist as needed.
Investigate all Report2Learn, Patient and Physician complaints.
Assist in updating and writing procedures. Research new procedures under Section Manager, Section Chiefs, Technical Specialists and Clinical Biochemist.
Review quality control data and consult with respective technical specialists, clinical biochemist, section chiefs and QC coordinators on any unacceptable trends. Maintain and monitor a comprehensive quality control program for reagents and equipment. Assures that QC is documented properly, and corrective actions are appropriate.
Manage and supervise personnel performance and productivity for the Chemistry and Immunology sections.
Manage and supervise the technical performance of instruments, specimen processing and laboratory testing for the Chemistry and Immunology sections.
Implement, in conjunction with section manager, and monitor an appropriate system for specimen identification, retention and retrieval.
Assist section manager in the interview process of employment candidates. Support clinical instructors, phlebotomists, and technical specialists, providing orientation of new personnel, ensuring that the new caregivers are familiar with the general issues relating to the department and section. Coordinate scheduling changes and facilitate the effective completion of orientation and training.
Assist in ordering supplies for areas of responsibility.
Ability to perform all requirements of MLS I and IIs and maintains technical competency of test systems.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
BS, Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science.
Minimum of four years clinical medical technology/laboratory science
Minimum of one-year supervisory experience.
Non-traditional routes to established skill level may be accepted after review of education and experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
