With decades of academic laboratory experience in pathology and genetics, the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories deliver advanced diagnostic testing to make personalized medicine a reality. Specializing in oncology, rare genetic disorders, and infectious disease, the laboratories are CLIA certified and CAP accredited. Our Medical Directors and seasoned technical staff have many years of experience in clinical testing and test development and are dedicated to providing the best quality service for physicians and their patients. Through our close partnership with the Knight BioLibrary and Histopathology Shared Resource Laboratories, research investigators can gain access to human biological specimens, histology, and immunohistochemistry services.

This position functions in support of the OHSU Knight Diagnostic Laboratories.  The purpose of this position is to provide information, consultation, and technical support to providers and staff within OHSU, as well as outside clients, regarding the appropriate use of genetic tests, performance specifications of genetic tests, and interpretation of results.  The incumbent establishes effective relationships with physicians, clinical genetic counselors, and laboratory staff, and will help achieve organizational quality and financial goals by analyzing ordering patterns, providing genetic test consultations, and suggesting alternative testing algorithms.  In addition, this position will be involved in laboratory data interpretation and reporting as well as test authorizations.

Consultation

Acts as main laboratory contact for genetic/genomic testing to OHSU clinicians, genetic counselors, and other providers, as well as clients outside of OHSU Counsels providers on cost-benefit ratio and clinical appropriateness of genetic testing

Test Order Review

Reviews all genetic test orders, including those for tests performed at OHSU and referral labs, for appropriateness. This will include medical record review, literature review, and consulting testing resources Contacts referral sources for clarification of ordersMonitors genetic test utilization by OHSU providers

Interpretation of Genetic Test Results and Test Development

Works closely with laboratory directors and staff scientists to interpret genetic test results accurately both in cytogenetics and in molecular genetic testingProvides detailed explanations of results to healthcare providers either by assisting in report generation or by phone/emailParticipates in test development

Education

Develops genetic/genomic testing educational resourcesProvides materials for OHSU Knight Diagnostic Lab websiteAssists in marketing genetic tests to internal and external clientsLeads and participates in quality improvement projects regarding genetic testingAttends and participates in Molecular and Medical Genetics Grand Rounds, and other Grand Rounds as appropriateAssists with the development of clinical and lab policies regarding the use of genetic testsActively participates in local, regional and national professional groups

Pre-authorization

Educates providers and clinic staff regarding insurance pre-authorization processes and facilitates access to the appropriate support resources -Troubleshoots pre-authorization problems

Compliance

Stays current on ICD and CPT codes Participates in genetic test pricing and coding discussions Monitors and communicates changes in national guidelines and policies, and federal and state regulations governing genetic testing

Other Duties

Attends and participates in section and departmental meetings. Follows all safety procedures and appropriate accrediting agency regulations when carrying out duties Complies with OHSU Code of Conduct and all Healthcare policies and proceduresTrains departmental staff and managers in all areas of position as needed Required Qualifications Master’s degree in human genetics and counselingABGC-certified genetic counselorAbility to develop a clinically appropriate genetic counseling plan Ability to provide genetic, medical, and technical information in a comprehensive, understandable, nondirective manner Knowledge of and ability to apply genetic counseling methods and techniques Knowledge of genetic diseases and disorders, birth defects, risks/options, and prenatal diagnosis screening tools Effective verbal and written communication skills Effective organizational skills Ability to perform medical literature searches from various databases including MEDLINE, PUBMED, POSSUM Gene Tests, and Micromedex. Ability to read, understand, interpret, and extrapolate information found in the literature and apply to clinical situationsAmerican Board of Genetic Counseling Certification, or American Board of Medical Genetics Certification in Genetic Counseling Preferred Qualifications Two years' experience in clinical cytogenetic and/or molecular testing laboratoriesWorking knowledge of all cytogenetic and molecular genetic laboratory tests, including test protocols, validations, trouble-shooting, and QA/QC Additional Details
