Summary
The Geologist is responsible for analyzing and interpreting geological data, populating and maintaining geological databases, working with the agency staff to produce maps and publications, and participating in outreach activities for the public and private sectors. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Plans and prepares geological maps, cross-sections, charts, technical reports, and publications pertaining to geologic resources, using results from field work, laboratory, and literature research. Analyzes and interprets geological, geochemical, and geophysical information from sources such as survey data, well logs, bore holes, aerial photographs, and geologic maps. Assess ground water and surface water supply sources and characteristics in order to provide information to state and federal agencies and the citizens of Arkansas. Identifies geologic risks and provides advice on ways in which geologic damage from environmental or geohazards can be mitigated. Plans and conducts geological, geochemical, geohazards, and geophysical field studies and surveys, sample collection, and drilling and testing programs used to collect data for research and application. Conducts geological, geohazards, and geophysical studies to provide information for use in regional development, site selection, and the development of public works projects. Locates and identifies potential resources of natural gas, oil, coal, minerals, aggregates, and ground water using aerial photographs, charts, surveys, and geological research tools. Performs other duties as assigned.
Dimensions
Frequent in-state travel is required. Occasional overnight and/or out-of-state travel may be required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of geology theories and practices. Knowledge of the methods and techniques for conducting petroleum, mineral, and water surveys, tests, and analyses. Knowledge of mineral identification, geologic mapping, and geologic laboratory procedures and instrumentation. Knowledge and proficiency of GIS and geology software. Ability to conduct geological investigations and analyses and compile data. Ability to write technical reports and geologic publications and to make oral presentations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in geology or a related field; plus Two years of experience in geology or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. Preferred Qualifications
+ Related coursework and experience in hydrogeology, groundwater contaminant fate and transport, and groundwater hydraulics
+ Experience in hydrogeologic field investigations and groundwater sampling
+ Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) 40-hour and current 8-hour training
+ Arkansas Registered Professional Geologist
