Job Title: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Manager

The GIS Manager is a leadership role within the GIS department, responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the organization's GIS activities. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, project management skills, and leadership capabilities to support complex GIS initiatives and ensure the effective use of geospatial data.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and LeadershipDevelop and implement the GIS department's strategic vision, goals, and initiatives in alignment with the organization's mission and objectives.Provide leadership and direction to the GIS team, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.GIS Project ManagementManage the planning, execution, and completion of GIS projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget.Oversee project scoping, scheduling, resource allocation, and risk management.Data Management and AnalysisLead the management, analysis, and quality control of complex spatial and attribute data within GIS databases.Conduct advanced spatial analysis, modeling, and data integration to support decision-making.Geodatabase Management and DesignOversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of geodatabases, ensuring efficient data organization and retrieval.Develop data standards and protocols for data consistency and accuracy.Mapping and CartographyEnsure the creation of advanced maps, cartographic products, and visualizations to meet project requirements.Oversee the production of digital and printed maps for presentations, reports, and public use.Web Mapping SolutionsBuild and maintain web maps and web-based GIS applications, ensuring they are responsive, scalable, and user-friendly.Implement spatial data visualization and interaction features on web platforms.Administer projects and users within web-based GIS applications.Quality Assurance and DocumentationEstablish comprehensive quality assurance procedures to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of GIS data, resolving complex discrepancies and errors.Maintain thorough documentation for GIS datasets, procedures, and workflows.Technical Support and TrainingProvide advanced technical support to GIS users, addressing complex data retrieval, software utilization, and troubleshooting.Mentor and provide training to GIS staff, enhancing their skills and capabilities.Budget and Resource ManagementDevelop and manage the GIS department's budget, ensuring efficient resource allocation and financial accountability.Coordinate procurement of GIS software, hardware, and data sources.Compliance and ReportingEnsure GIS projects and data management comply with industry standards, regulations, and data security requirements.Prepare and present reports on GIS activities, projects, and performance to senior management and stakeholders.Research and InnovationStay current with GIS industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.Identify opportunities for process improvement, innovation, and research within the GIS department.QualificationsBachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field is required; a master's degree is preferred.Substantial experience in GIS, with a minimum of 7 years in progressively responsible roles, including project management.In-depth expertise in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and advanced data manipulation and analysis.Profound knowledge of GIS principles, spatial analysis, and data management.Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.Strong interpersonal, communication, and team collaboration abilities.Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office.A valid driver's license may be required for field data collection tasks.
The GIS Manager primarily works in an office environment but may engage in fieldwork or on-site project support as needed. This role involves overseeing geospatial operations and collaborating with team members and stakeholders.
