Job Description Summary:
The Hypersonic and Advanced Weapons group at Draper is seeking a Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) Systems Engineer to work within multi-disciplinary teams to design and assess next-generation weapon system concepts for the war fighter. This role will be of high interest to applicants that desire to participate in the conceptualization and development of new US military capabilities in strategic mission domains, as well as the enabling guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) subsystem technology.Relevant mission domains may include: global strike and/or strategic deterrent systems, missile defense systems, space systems, precision guided munitions, and autonomous air/sea vehicles.
Duties and responsibilities may include:
• Identification of customer mission needs and development of use cases;
• Requirements development;
• Model-based analysis of alternatives for GNC design concepts;
• System performance simulation and analysis;
• Presentation of analysis results to both internal and external stake-holders;
• Development of systems engineering, design, and analysis artifacts/documentation.
A successful candidate will be highly motivated to: (a) support the delivery of technology solutions that are of strategic importance to the nation in the context of evolving threats from peer and near-peer competitors, and (b) build deeper expertise in both the core mission domain and underlying GNC/avionics technology.
Working in a dynamic team environment developing state-of-the-art weapon/GN&C systems will provide exposure to a wide range of advanced technologies as well as afford opportunities for increased leadership/impact on the development of new war-fighter capability.
Job Description:
Duties/Responsibilities
• Participate in the requirements assessments.
• Assists in strategic technical planning, project management, performance engineering, risk management and interface design.
• Conducts requirements engineering, scheduling, reliability, development, and evaluation, maintainability and analysis for training.
• Supports the analyses and allocation of requirements.
• Assists in the capture and translation of mission and customer requirements/needs into systems/capability requirements and solutions.
• Assist in the assessment effort in conducting both formal and informal evaluations and analysis.
• Analyze assessment results and make improvement/change recommendations.
• Ensure assessment results and recommendations can be incorporated into the requirements documentation.
• Independently execute system engineering lifecycle assignments under the oversight of program leadership.
• Provide content for technical reports and presentations with appropriate guidance.
• Adapt appropriately to changes in program priorities and requirements.
• Identify challenges associated with assigned work and communicate them to project leadership.
Skills/Abilities
• Highly-organized, capable of approaching problems with a system-level perspective
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Practical experience with the systems engineering process
• Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and/or digital engineering (DE) tools/methods
• Roles may require proficiency with modeling/simulation, computer coding languages, SysML, STPA, DOORs, and/or other engineering analysis tools
• Knowledge of GN&C, avionics architectures, fault tolerance, cyber/security, comms/encryption, or other technologies may be required as defined in the summary.
Education
Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, or related field. Masters degree preferred.
Experience
0-3 years experience in systems engineering with emphasis in requirements engineering.
Additional Job Description:
Foundational knowledge of guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) technology;
Practical experience with simulation-based performance analysis;
Proficiency in systems engineering methods;
Strong presentation skills and the ability to articulate complex technical ideas.
Domain experience with respect to strategic weapon systems, as defined above;
Specific experience with hypersonic reentry systems;
Experience with multi-objective optimization techniques;
Experience with digital engineering and/or model-based engineering (MBE) frameworks and integrated modeling tools.
