Job Summary/Description:

The Government/Political Reporter/MMJ covers the Alaska Legislature, Alaska's Congressional delegation, and the city government. the perfect candidate for this role has a strong interest in covering elections, government reporting, holding elected officials accountable, and delivering in-depth reporting on federal/state tax dollars and programs at work.

Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Research, pitch, gather, write, and report news stories on-air and online in the most accurate, appealing, timely, and creative way using all sources
* Report "live" on the scene and off the CTV Digital Desk
* Travel for coverage as assigned, frequently to Alaska's Capitol located in Juneau during the annual Legislative Session
* Make regular government/political beat checks and pitch stories of interest to our statewide audience
* Conduct interviews - LIVE and recorded - in the field and using digital platforms
* Develop and maintain sources of information and knowledge on the government beat
* Demonstrate sound news judgment, and collaborate with others to present the story
* Must be able to utilize non-linear editing equipment on a daily basis (Grass Valley Edius experience is a plus)
* Enterprise research-driven packages under tight deadlines
* Pitch stories daily through the story pitch process and work directly with the Managing Editor to develop the stories to fruition daily
* Post and update stories on the web, often remotely from the field
* Provide news content for social media, including Facebook, and interact with viewers
* Possess a broad and working knowledge of the viewing area, including people, places, and history of Alaska
* Enter scripts, CG text, and times into newsroom software (ENPS) prior to newscasts
* Use knowledge of appropriate field lighting to enhance overall news presentation Critique, feedback, and training are part of the job
* Communicate regularly with the digital staff and other appropriate staff members during breaking news
* Attend/host/speak at community service, schools, and community events; meet and greet viewers
* Follow clothing and appearance guidelines
* Must be a visual storyteller; perform creative stand-ups and explanatory live shots
* Evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required
* Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field (political science degree is a plus)
* On-air experience in the broadcast news industry required
* Experience with broadcast/digital cameras, newsroom software (ENPS), and non-linear editing (Grass Valley Edius experience a plus)
* Be able to write in a clear, concise, conversational manner
* Knowledge of AP Stylebook
* Adherence to SPJ's Code of Ethics
* Must possess excellent interview and conversational writing skills
* Excellent live reporting skills and strong on-camera presentation skills required
* Basic computer knowledge including newsroom software (such as ENPS), Microsoft applications, and internet use
