About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI): The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more. About Indiana Department of Environmental Management: Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state. Role Overview: To assist the Beach/Clean Marina Program Coordinator and the Lakewide Action & Management Plan (LAMP)/Remedial Action Plan (RAP) Coordinator with outreach, education, and evaluation of the Lake Michigan programs to engage stakeholders and the general public. The focus of this position is expected to be on the Lake Michigan Beach Monitoring and Notification Program (BeachAlert). This work will involve a variety of activities, including assisting in implementing programmatic initiatives, conducting data collection and analysis, reporting on results, and developing social media templates to promote the programs. General office working conditions. Up to 3 working days per week may be spent outside during the summer months. Salary Statement: The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts. Location: This position is located in IDEM's Northwest Regional Office Valparaiso, Indiana. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows: + Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study + Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline + Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations + Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects + Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives The position will involve assisting NWRO staff with implementing programmatic initiatives, particularly related to outreach and education regarding the IDEM BeachAlert online portal. Specific tasks may include: coordinating and staffing booths for beach outreach events; reviewing outreach materials/activities related to IDEM's Lake Michigan Programs and making specific recommendations for improvements to increase accessibility and engagement; meeting with area beach managers and organizations; designing and implementing surveys or other instruments to collect actionable information from beachgoers; development of one or more reports summarizing findings; and presentation of findings to appropriate staff. What You'll Need for Success: + Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education. + Academic work in related field + Excellent oral and written communication skills + Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline + Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels + Ability to conduct well-informed research + Ability to solve complex, critical problems + Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures IDEM seeks a well-rounded, outgoing, and self-motivated individual with excellent written and verbal communications skills. Working with the public and soliciting stakeholder and public feedback will be essential in this position. Some weekend and evening work may be required. Experience or strong interest in outreach, marketing and communications, social science, education, social media, environmental science or similar areas as well as familiarity with a variety of computer software packages, such as the Microsoft Office Suite and ESRI's ArcGIS, will be a plus. A valid Indiana driver's license is required. The ability to walk some distance over irregular or rough terrain may be required. Occasional lifting up to 35 pounds may be required.
