About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI): The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more. About Indiana Department of Environmental Management: Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state. Role Overview: This position exists at the IGCN, Office of Program Support of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Incumbent will report to the OPS DAC. The purpose of the position is to provide assistance with needed updates to the above-mentioned programs within OPS. Intern will work as an environmental intern on assisting with implementation of a new pollution prevention effort to promote programs within small to medium size businesses across the state and especially in disadvantaged communities. The incumbent’s work includes creating program materials and webinars, compiling lists, outreaching to the business community, updating and implementing marketing plan, creating various press/social media releases, and other tasks to support the program. The intern will perform research as needed and prepare various reports for the OPS DAC including tracking program metrics and successes. The intern will work with managers, and other professional staff in OPS with various assignments in overall support of OPS including support of the Indiana Clean Community Program and collaboration with the Compliance & Technical Assistance Program staff. Salary Statement: The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts. Location: This position is located in IDEM Offices, Indiana Government Center North, Downtown Indianapolis. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows: + Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study + Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline + Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations + Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects + Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives + Provide assistance with updating and development of the above-mentioned program information. + Revise and refine program marketing strategy and outreach efforts. + Assist in creating new print, electronic and social media materials. + Conduct research as requested. + Update and maintain program databases / spreadsheets. + Assist with developing and implementing targeted outreach materials. + Work with program staff and media experts to develop social media tools and materials for use at key outreach periods. + Prepare technical reports as needed including developing and tracking metrics. What You'll Need for Success: + Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education. + Use knowledge of environmental health sciences, public and environmental health, environmental protection principles and practices. + Academic work in related field + Excellent oral and written communication skills + Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline + Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels + Ability to conduct well-informed research + Ability to solve complex, critical problems + Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures + Public speaking and presentation skills. + Ability to make presentations and conduct outreach to various customers / audiences (phone, email and in-person). + Marketing knowledge, including social media and marketing planning, technical skills, Training or skills in photography and video production are a plus. + Ability to use Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Microsoft Office and Adobe Design Suite products. + Ability to use databases and spreadsheets and analyze current and historic complaint data. + Effective planning and organizational skills. + Ability to work independently. + Ability to speak to and interact with customers, community groups, local representatives and citizens in a professional manner.
