Role Overview:
The Governmental Affairs Intern will provide logistical and program support for an education and outreach effort to encourage dialogue around critical housing and community development issues among practitioners, policymakers, and the communities they serve. The intern will have the opportunity to partner with the IHCDA Director of Industry and Governmental Affairs and the Governmental Affairs Liaison in our task of working with Federal, State, and Local Elected officials and their support staffs to evaluate and impact legislation and policies that affect the mission and goals of the IHCDA.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
A Day in the Life:
The Industry & Governmental Affairs Intern is exposed to a variety of agency activities. The intern will complete specific projects and tasks, as well as assist with general office work such as responding to customer and constituent inquiries, meeting preparations, research, etc.
+ Policy Research: The intern will work with the Director of Industry and Governmental Affairs to determine current policy and industry standards around workforce housing. This will also include research on initiatives in other states. The intern will also help provide support for several agency committees and task forces.
+ Impact Study: The intern will work with the Director to identify key performance indicators for existing and potential agency programs and initiatives. This will include trend and policy analysis of the programs.
+ Event Management: The intern will help plan events regarding opportunity zones and modular housing tailored for key stakeholders and housing leaders with the goal of high-level policy discussions, problem-solving, and the sharing of ideas that advance long-term solutions for the affordable housing industry.
+ Relationship Building: This role offers a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective on working in state government and the all-important skill of relationship building. In addition to phone and virtual meetings, constituent assistance, and general research, a summer-long project of compiling a comprehensive contact list of elected Indiana officials, with in-depth detail is a goal.
+ Monitoring: The intern will assist in the monitoring of the Statewide Housing Inventory Platform progress, as well as communications with Municipal Partners involved in the distribution of CARES Act dollars.
What You'll Need for Success:
+ Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
+ Academic work in related field
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
+ Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
+ Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
+ Ability to conduct well-informed research
+ Ability to solve complex, critical problems
+ Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
+ Ability to maintain confidentiality
+ Must have the passion of a self-starter and quick learner
