Position Title          Grounds Maintenance 

Department            Facilities Management

Reports to              Grounds Supervisor

Appointment           Full-time; 40 hours per week

Pay Rate                 $19.15 per hour 

*Upon successful completion of the Teamsters 60-day probation, wage increases to $19.40 per hour *

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Provide grounds maintenance support to Facilities Management. Grounds Maintenance includes but is not limited to: preparation, planting, mowing repair, replacement and renovation of ground covers, plants, shrubs, sidewalks, streets and lots; small tree removal and pruning; operation and maintenance of surface and sewer water systems as well as manual and computer based irrigation systems; use, operate, and maintain tools and equipment including tractors, mowers, snowplows, and material handling; operate and use moderate to heavy equipment in efficient safe manner; refuse and garbage maintenance; move and haul property as instructed; some limited brick and concrete work and maintenance of retaining walls; carry out all duties in safe and efficient manner  consistent with University policies and procedures. Varying amount of after hour and special event hours as needed; perform other related duties as assigned.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Proven experience with and knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures as stated above; previous experience with manual and power operated equipment including all types of mowers, edgers, chainsaws, etc. related to this position; good comprehensive skills including ability to read and comprehend verbal and written instructions; prior experience operating all related implements and equipment with agility and safety; work as a team and independently; ability to operate forklift; demonstrated good safety, attendance and work record; must have a valid Illinois driver’s license; D.O.T. medium weight truck physical required.

Selected candidate must become member of the Teamsters, Chauffeurs and Helpers Local Union.  

MENTAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with our without reasonable accommodation; ability to tolerate constant or extreme noise, independently handle minimum 50 pounds; visual ability to operate equipment effectively and safely; hearing ability to hold conversations through earpiece and in person; speaking ability to effectively communication with other individuals; work environment is primarily outdoor. Ability to tolerate extreme temperatures while working outside is also required.
