Groundwater and Geochemistry Group Scientists and Engineers - Grand Junction, CO
Summary
**Title:** Groundwater and Geochemistry Group Scientists and Engineers - Grand Junction, CO
**ID:** 2104 - RSI - 06
Description
RSI’s Groundwater and Geochemistry Group (GGG) is seeking groundwater scientists and engineers of all disciplines, education, and experience levels at their Grand Junction and Westminster, Colorado; Fernald, Ohio; and Weldon Spring, Missouri locations. All positions are hybrid allowing staff to work 50% from home and 50% from the office. The GGG is a diverse and highly qualified team of hydrogeologists, geochemists, engineers, and environmental scientists (some of whom are industry leaders in their field), with expertise in numerical groundwater flow and reactive transport modeling, geochemistry, three-dimensional visualization and evaluation, groundwater treatment, and field characterization.
As the prime contractor to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Legacy Management (LM) program ( https://www.energy.gov/lm/sites ), the bulk of our work focuses on site characterization, updates to conceptual site models, and developing groundwater compliance and remediation strategies for a wide range of contaminated sites across the nation. This is an exciting time to be a groundwater scientist or engineer within the LMS Program because in many cases the compliance strategies selected 20 to 30 years ago are not performing as expected resulting in the need for new or revised compliance strategies. Accordingly, many of the 103 sites in the LM program are undergoing site and remedial investigations, feasibility studies, and remedial alternatives evaluations under CERCLA, UMTRCA, and FUSRAP regulatory programs in cooperation with state and tribal agencies. And the number of sites in the program continues to grow.
Activities the GGG are currently undertaking include:
+ Conceptual model development,
+ 3-D visualization model development and quantitative evaluations (e.g., bulk plume metrics),
+ Numerical groundwater flow and reactive transport modeling,
+ Remedial design and evaluation,
+ Data mining and data worth analyses,
+ Uncertainty evaluations using iterative ensemble smoothing,
+ Aquifer and slug testing,
+ Borehole and surface geophysics,
+ Groundwater-surface water interaction,
+ Monitoring and extraction well installation,
+ PHREEQC modeling,
+ Tracer testing,
+ Column testing to characterize reactive transport modeling inputs,
+ Groundwater treatability studies,
+ Treatment system design and optimization,
+ Background studies,
+ Technical report preparation and presentations to DOE, regulators, stakeholders, professional conference attendees, undergraduate and graduate students, and the public through educational outreach events; these may also include participating in or leading site tours.
In contrast to the nature of most environmental consulting duties, the nature of the LM contract allows GGG practitioners to focus solely on technical work, without the burden of business development or project management requirements. Also, each GGG position is fully funded, insulating the positions from the boom-and-bust cycles experienced elsewhere in the industry. Additionally, because the GGG focuses on technical work, there is an emphasis on technical skill development; you will get opportunities to learn and apply new skills. Lastly, because the GGG does not operate as a traditional consulting firm, it is possible, and encouraged, to maintain a work-life balance.
GGG positions are full-time exempt with annual salaries ranging from $50,000 to $170,000 based on experience, education, training, and technical discipline. Travel is anticipated to range between 5% and 25% with lower percentages associated with office tasks and higher percentages associated with field work.
