General Summary:Job Profile Summary:
This position reports into the Underwriting Manager or Director for the products they underwrite and is responsible for the evaluation and selection of risk (binding via contract) which ensure the profitable acquisition of new policyholders and the continued profitable retention of in-force cases within assigned authority levels. This position may also assist in the training, technical development and mentoring of Underwriters as well as assisting Management with the day-to-day direction for their work unit by assigning work priorities for Underwriters to ensure the unit and department reaches established service measures.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Make appropriate risk selection based on the facts presentedFully document reasons and thought processes to support case decisions madeAssist in the analyzing and identifying early and ongoing risk trendsDevelop personal credibility with sales force, key brokers, customers both external and internal customers and field managementSupport Unum/Colonial Life’s commitment to privacy and safeguarding confidential information by accurately verifying applicant’s key individual identifiersAssist in supporting the achievement of specific top-line, bottom-line growthProvide technical support and mentoring for employees in the team and departmentDevelop selection and retention of customers through accurate risk assessmentIdentify efficiency improvements to include new and better ways to handle Underwriting tasks through automation and training. Alternative focuses may include auditing, procedures, compliance and regulatory functionsAssist with onboarding and training of new hires and provide feedback and/or recommendations to team manager. Also, may provide documented information on skill/knowledge gaps for existing employees and develop and administer a follow-up action plan in conjunction with team manager.May be asked to assist with policy level research issues and communicate resolution/findings/recommendations, as applicablePrepare and conduct daily start up meetings when neededPuts goals of department before team/individual achievements and recognitionIdentify training needs through routine audits, daily review of work

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$53,300.00-$100,700.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.  All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
