GSE Mechanic Manager

Job Summary

The GSE Manager at AGI, located at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), is responsible for the overall management, maintenance, and operational readiness of all ground support equipment (GSE) within AGI’s operations. This leadership role involves overseeing a team of supervisors and mechanics, managing the budget and resources for GSE operations, and ensuring that all equipment meets the highest standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency. The GSE Manager will also work closely with other departments to support AGI’s operational objectives and ensure seamless airport operations.

Job Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Management: Lead and manage a team of GSE Supervisors, Mechanics, and support staff. Provide direction, training, and development opportunities to ensure a high-performing team.

Operational Oversight: Oversee all GSE maintenance and repair activities, ensuring that equipment is maintained according to schedule and is readily available to meet operational demands. Coordinate with other airport departments to ensure smooth and efficient operations.

Budget Management: Develop and manage the GSE department’s budget, including forecasting expenses, tracking costs, and identifying opportunities for cost savings. Ensure that all expenditures align with AGI’s financial goals.

Safety and Compliance: Ensure all GSE operations comply with AGI’s safety policies and federal, state, and local regulations. Implement and enforce safety protocols, conduct regular safety audits, and ensure that all staff are trained in proper safety procedures.

Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategies for GSE maintenance, replacement, and upgrades to support AGI’s long-term operational goals. This includes planning for future equipment needs, evaluating new technologies, and improving maintenance processes.

Performance Monitoring and Reporting: Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) for GSE operations, including equipment uptime, maintenance costs, and safety incidents. Prepare and present regular reports to senior management on the status of GSE operations.

Vendor Management: Manage relationships with vendors and suppliers for parts, equipment, and services. Negotiate contracts, oversee procurement processes, and ensure timely delivery of necessary resources.

Inventory Control: Oversee the management of parts and equipment inventory to ensure that the team has the resources needed to perform maintenance and repairs without delay.

Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement opportunities for process improvements within the GSE department. Promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the team.

Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including Operations, Fleet Management, Planning, and Finance, to ensure that GSE operations align with the broader goals of AGI. Facilitate effective communication and collaboration across teams.

Skills and Qualifications

Leadership Experience: Proven experience in a management role, ideally within GSE maintenance or a related field, with a strong track record of leading and developing teams.

Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of GSE, including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Experience with the maintenance and repair of a wide range of ground support equipment.

Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of budgeting, financial management, and cost control in an operational setting.

Safety and Regulatory Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of safety standards, regulations, and best practices related to GSE operations in an airport environment.

Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop and execute strategic plans that align with AGI’s operational goals. Experience in long-term planning for equipment and resource needs.

Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with team members, senior management, and external partners.

Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions and quickly resolve issues as they arise.

Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in GSE maintenance or a related field, with at least 3-5 years in a management role.

Preferred Experience

Airport Operations: Previous experience managing GSE operations in an airport environment, with familiarity with the challenges and demands of a busy international airport like ORD.

Technical Certification: Certification in automotive, diesel mechanics, or a related field is preferred.
