Hardware Materials Engineer Intern, Amazon Ring

The Role: As a Hardware Materials Engineer Intern at Amazon Ring, you will engage with an experienced cross-disciplinary staff from NPI to Operations to define material qualification requirements and criteria. You will work closely with an internal inter-disciplinary team, and outside partners to drive key aspects of product definition, execution, and test. You must be responsive, flexible, and able to succeed within an open and collaborative peer environment.

As part of a project team, you will work alongside senior hardware materials and mechanical engineers; supporting the design, debug, validate, and optimization of the products. You will be involved in projects from concept through production, gaining exposure to the complete design lifecycle. You will also support engineering builds gaining experience with high-volume manufacturing.

Key job responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Provide technical expertise in materials engineering / composition and science, while working with materials suppliers, CMs and external Labs for new product needs, new tooling, new processes.
- Work with suppliers and CMs to develop and execute material qualification plans to ensure launch of new high quality and reliable products for safe launches.
- Works with the cross-functional program team in the selection and identification of new materials / components to be used in a new product and new process development.
- Lead, analyze and complete parts approval process results, and communicate to program teams any areas of concerns on specific materials or components being qualified.
- Participate in product risk assessment and provide inputs based on material characteristics, durability and ruggedness per use cases.
- Initiates materials analysis and improvement needed to address internal and external customer concerns and complaints on current products due to material fatigue, ageing, or any safety issue related to materials or components.
- Qualifies materials and components to meet product applications, Sustainability, Safety and Environmental Compliance requirements.
- Provides technical support during material supplier manufacturing plant audits to ensure process controls are emplaced to achieve repeatability of parts quality and meet materials specification per defined processes.
- Develop and implement qualified materials and components databases per use cases, and various application requirements.
