Who we’re looking for

Toyota’s Manufacturing Parts Operations team is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Haz Mat Compliance Manager.

The primary responsibility of this role is to lead operational compliance initiatives to support all Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) locations to meet or exceed Haz Mat regulatory requirements. 

Reporting to the Logistics Operations Senior Manager, the person in this role will lead the Haz Mat Compliance Team objective to develop and implement Haz Mat policies, programs, and training to ensure Toyota’s regulatory compliance.  This leader will collaborate with regulatory agencies, trade groups, and internal TMNA teams to establish and execute a long-term compliance strategy for Toyota Motor North America.  

What you’ll be doing

Lead the development & implementation of the hazardous material operational strategy and drive alignment to that strategy throughout Toyota Motor North America.

Develop & implement policies, programs, and procedures for the management of hazardous materials throughout Toyota Motor North America, including affiliates within the USA, Canada & Mexico

Engage with emerging regulations and legislation through the development of regulatory interpretation, guidance, and application to all areas of international hazardous material transport.

Provide regulatory guidance that supports lithium battery engineering and design, battery manufacturing, and battery packaging divisions within both TMNA and TMC in the rapidly evolving area of lithium battery technologies.

Develop & implement training resources, content, eLearnings, and reporting capabilities to drive appropriate deployment of compliance training throughout Toyota Motor North America, including affiliates within the USA, Canada & Mexico. Provide targeted regulatory risk identification, quantification, and mitigation advice as required.

Oversee the development of facility hazardous material coordinators, perform onsite compliance support evaluations, conduct compliance audits, and facilitate the implementation of mitigation activities.

Lead & develop the Hazmat Compliance Team to implement standardized processes and timely closure of hazardous material & chemical management concerns related to emerging and existing regulations across Toyota Motor North America and its affiliates. 

Contribute to the Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs function and work closely with the management team to support the achievement of shared goals.

Support North American and international Toyota business units in hazardous materials, transportation, and Chemical regulations.

Collaborate with the packaging teams to ensure all packaging meets regulatory requirements prior to part movement in the supply chain.

Support the Chemical Management Office (CMO) to ensure part EDS/SDS is collected to ensure compliance prior to part movement in the supply chain.

Coordinate with the Toyota legal team to lead engagement with regulatory agencies including on-site inspections, regulatory change requests, and agency inquiries. 

Manage the haz mat team budget including, annual budget requests, quarterly forecasts, and monthly analysis.

Oversee the engagement with haz mat compliance consultants, software providers, and regulatory publications such as Currie, Chemtrec, Bureau of Dangerous Goods, Ship Haz Mat, IATA, IMDG, and DOT.

Lead cross functional process improvement (JKK) and Problem Solving (TBP) both within the haz mat team and across the organization.

What you bring

Bachelor’s Degree or higher or 10+ years of equivalent professional experience in Haz Mat or Supply Chain Management

Direct Haz Mat compliance experience

Broad understanding of the structure of hazardous material laws and regulations

Supervisory experience with responsibility for direct reports

Ability to work with, influence, coordinate, and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel

Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint

Ability to travel, both domestic and international, 25%-50%

Added bonus if you have

Advanced Degree (above Bachelor’s)

Current Certified Dangerous Goods Professional (CMDG Certification)

Current certification in one or more of the following: 49 CFR DOT Transport Regulations, Canadian Transportation Regulations, Mexico Transportation Regulations, International Civil Aviation, International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code

Working experience with Microsoft Power BI (including data importation, slicer manipulation, report creation and troubleshooting)

Experience interfacing with regulatory agencies and investigations

Experience with Haz Mat trade group, such as Professional Rechargeable Battery Association (PRBA) or Council on Safe Transportation of Hazardous Articles (COSTHA)

TBP Panel Certified (Toyota Team Member Only)

Proficiency in JKK development and application (Toyota Team Member Only)

Demonstrated capability to manage using OMDS/FMDS/Process Visualization (Toyota Team Member Only)
