Hazardous Materials Tech I

Shared Services: Risk Management- (Full-Time, Day Shift) -

 

Job Summary: The Hazardous Materials Tech I works to protect employees, customers, students, surrounding community and environment from exposure to hazardous materials; performs hazardous waste collection and consolidation; manages all aspects of the hazardous waste program including management of satellite accumulation areas, proper storage and segregation and all labeling requirements; participates in the on-call Emergency Response Team as necessary; maintains equipment and storage facilities.  Performs other duties as needed. 

Education and Experience: High school Diploma or GED required.  Introductory college coursework in chemistry, biology, and environmental science preferred.  No experience required.  Minimum one year prior experience in related field preferred. 

Knowledge and Skills: Able to write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer and Windows-based software programs necessary to the position.  Apply technical expertise to identify and mitigate hazards.  Able to work with hand tools, work in various personal protective equipment, including chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection.  Able to communicate in English with excellent oral, written, and listening communication skills.  Able to give presentations; work as a team player to achieve LLUAHSC and departmental goals; relate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; lead others to cooperate and follow a specific course of action; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; teach and collaborate; accept direction; maintain confidentiality of information.  Able to demonstrate sound and mature judgment and analytical skills; compose and edit written documents and communications; read and write efficiently; think critically; perform basic math functions; initiate and manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information and pay close attention to detail; work independently with minimal supervision and meet expected deadlines.  Able to recognize and report safety hazards.  Able to smell chemicals or odors in environment, especially when detecting a breakthrough in a respirator.  Able to correctly read equipment dials or indicators, computer screens, monitor gauges and instruments.  Able to identify and distinguish various sounds associated with workplace and potential hazards.  Discern temperature variances through touch. 

Licensures and Certifications: Valid driver's license required at time of hire.  Eligible for respirator (half-face and SCBA) use and passing of quantitative fit testing, HAZWOPER and First Receiver Operations and Decontamination for Healthcare certifications.
