About the role
The Hazardous Waste Technician II (HWT level 2) is a mid-level position within the Hazardous materials operations at Covanta Environment Solutions. The HWT Level 2 will be experienced and capable of conducting Hazardous and non-hazardous waste treatment utilizing the various technologies and chemicals available to them with minimal supervision. The HWT level 2, will be proficient in handling, sorting, and consolidating hazardous materials received in the plant and onsite at customers locations. The HWT level 2 is responsible for the segregation, packing, labeling, loading, and preparing for transportation of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste. The HWT Level 2 also prepares waste drums for pick-up and delivery at customer sites and is responsible for compliance to municipal, provincial, and federal guidelines. The HWT level 2 is expected to be proficient in handling of hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
Position Responsibilities
Coordinate sampling and analysis to determine the correct course of treatment for the hazardous waste as prescribed by standard procedures and operational permits.
Handling, sorting, and consolidating hazardous materials received in the plant and onsite at customers locations.
Treat waste by adding materials necessary to alter the chemical nature of solid and liquid waste in a manner that is always safe and secure.
Ensure strict operating procedures and safety standards are always followed.
Participate in lab pack segregation tasks.
Travel to customer site to prepare waste/lab packs, both hazardous and non-hazardous, for transportation.
Operate a variety of equipment including shredders, grinders, conveyor belts, hand trucks, forklifts, and other power tools in accordance with company policies and procedures as well as Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
Safely operate mobile equipment within the facility boundaries.
Advise and work with operation and transport teams to provide support on the safe and proper handling of hazardous waste.
Responsible for unloading, segregating, packaging, labeling, and loading for transportation of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
Coordinate the analysis of all incoming samples and recording of results in various systems.
Submit all associated paperwork, as required, for regulatory and safety record keeping requirements.
Train, mentor, and coach junior staff members.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma / GED required.
3-4 years of experience
Ability to travel 15% of the time.
Ability and experience to operate mobile equipment.
Ability and experience to handle hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
Experience in NetSuite
Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook, Word, and Excel
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Post secondary degree/diploma in chemistry, engineering, environmental sciences or similar field, preferred
Valid provincial “G” level driver’s license preferred at the time of hire, or ability to obtain within the first 6 months of employment.
Physical Demands of the Role
Ability to kneel, crawl, stoop, bend, and twist for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift/carry 50lbs
Ability to work from heights and in confined spaces
Qualify to wear a full-face respirator
Consistently work in various weather conditions
