Position Title:Transportation Planning Division / Planning Unit InternLocation:1 S Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27601
Internship Duration:10-week internship (May 27-August 1, 2025)
About the Role:The Transportation Planning Division plays a critical role in developing Comprehensive Transportation Plans (CTPs), coordinating with Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and Rural Planning Organizations (RPOs), and supporting special transportation-related projects. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in transportation planning and engineering, working alongside a team of professionals to support North Carolina’s growing infrastructure needs.
Interns will have the chance to engage in real-world projects, refine technical skills, and explore the core principles of transportation planning through collaborative work and training resources. By the end of the internship, interns will gain valuable insights into the transportation planning process and its role in building safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Assist engineers with the development of Comprehensive Transportation Plans (CTPs).
+ Participate in MPO/RPO meetings to understand regional transportation planning efforts.
+ Contribute to special projects that enhance transportation operations and infrastructure.
+ Prepare materials, analyze data, and draft reports to support planning projects.
+ Utilize software tools like Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and ArcGIS Pro for project tasks.
+ Engage in training programs, including an introductory course on transportation planning basics, to build foundational knowledge.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Education Level:Enrolled in or recently graduated from a college-level program.
+ Majors:Civil, Mechanical, or other engineering fields; GIS; Communications, or related disciplines.
+ Skills:
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
+ Experience with Adobe software and ArcGIS Pro.
+ Strong communication and analytical skills.
+ Attributes:
+ Interest in transportation planning and engineering.
+ Adaptability, collaboration, and a strong work ethic.

+ Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) within the past three years.
+ 24 credit hours completed.
+ Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
+ Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship
