Collegiate Sports Ferrum College, an NCAA Division III institution located in Ferrum, Virginia, is looking for a motivated, energetic and passionate individual to be our next Head Athletic Trainer. This is a full-time, 12-month position that reports directly to the Director of Athletics and serves on the Director of Athletics senior administrative team.Ferrum College is a proud member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). We will be transiting from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to Division II Conference Carolinas in the fall of 2025.
Primary Purpose: The Head Athletic Trainer will oversee all aspects in providing medical services for Ferrum’s 20 varsity programs. With oversight of the Assistant Athletic Trainers staff, the Head Athletic Trainer will be responsible for serving as the leading expert in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses to our student-athletes. The successful candidate will ensure a culture of compliance within all NCAA Division III, ODAC and Ferrum College rules and regulations, and ensure all staff members and student-athletes comply with same. Finally, the successful candidate will serve in administrative capacity as needed and directed by the Director of Athletics.
Essential Functions:
Oversee the operation of the athletic training department., including, but not limited to, the daily health care for Ferrum College student-athletes and in maintaining appropriate standards put forth by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Serve as the point of contact with the Ferrum College team physician. Record and maintain appropriate medical records for treatment given through appropriate athletic training software. Schedule, and provide daily coverage for all practice and competition, including some travel responsibilities, of assigned sports. Represent the department on any relevant student health meetings on campus, as well as the department representative on all Old Dominion Athletic Conference meetings. Oversee all inventory, maintenance and budget operations for the Athletic Training area. Serve on the senior administrative team for the Director of Athletics. Serve on department and campus-wide committees as requested, as well as other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics. Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Head Athletic Trainer will oversee a full-time staff, as well as any per diem athletic trainers, work study students and student interns.
Other Preferences:
The candidate must be able to work independently and have the ability to work on evenings and weekends throughout the year to accomplish the tasks necessary for success in this field. The successful candidate must be committed to working and teaching within an environment that embraces the development of students around their education, cultural inclusion and diversity, mental health awareness and NCAA and ODAC compliance.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree; BOC certification; eligible for State of Virginia Athletic Training Licensure; current Emergency Cardiac Care Certified (ECC) certification; basic computer and Microsoft Office skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s Degree; experience working in a coeducational collegiate environment; five or more years of experience as a certified athletic trainer; experience with the Athletic Trainer System. Additional certifications are desirable (First AID/CPR instructor, reputable strength and conditioning certification, Graston technique, FMS, etc.).
Required Licenses:
BOC certification; eligible for State of Virginia Athletic Training Licensure; current Emergency Cardiac Care Certified (ECC) certification; Current and valid driver’s license required.
