Head of MassMutual Strategic Distributors - Life/DI

The Head of MMSD Life/DI will be a member of the senior leadership team of MassMutual and responsible for U.S. retail life insurance and DI distribution in the third-party market.  They will be a critical leader to help drive forward MassMutual’s strategy to expand distribution to get to more people where they are.  This leader will establish the overall strategic vision, execute plans and goals to accelerate existing strong growth and drive MassMutual to be a leading life and DI insurer in the third-party market. 

About MassMutual Strategic Distributors

MassMutual Strategic Distributors (MMSD) is the dedicated third-party distribution channel of MassMutual responsible for providing MassMutual’s retail life, disability income, annuity and life-LTC hybrid solutions to customers working with our third-party distribution partners.

MMSD is aggressively growing top line sales by expanding existing and establishing new partnerships with financial institutions, IMOs and BGAs and making significant investments in technology, sales, operations, marketing and product development. Our strategy is driven by dedicated teams across the enterprise where we will prioritize a dynamic, agile, and entrepreneurial culture.

Key Responsibilities

The Head of MMSD Life/DI will report to the Head of Third Party and New Markets and will be responsible for several critical functions. These functions and key responsibilities include:

Develop and implement strategies to accelerate growth and gain market share for MassMutual’s life and DI sales in the third-party market

Lead, coach and develop a team of managers and other leaders responsible for external and internal wholesalers, key account managers, advanced sales and learning/performance

Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including technology, product and client experience, to prioritize initiatives, allocate resources and align teams to strategic plans

Partner with new business, underwriting and client experience service teams to develop a plan to  meet and exceed the expectations of our distribution partners and their financial professionals

Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, transparency and data-driven decision making within team

Develop clear goals, KPIs and milestones aligned with the strategic plans of the business

Develop and cultivate strong working relationships and partners with leaders and centers of influence within MMSD’s key distribution relationships

Expand an organization with high performing diverse talent and foster an inclusive environment  

Keep team motivated, focused on implementing strategic priorities

Create a culture where associates prioritize clients’ needs, feel empowered, hold themselves accountable for execution, seek to solve problems and thrive in a fast-paced environment

Excels at creating new market opportunities and establishing and executing innovative strategies to educate markets on new products and features

Effectively lead and manage across a matrixed organization, fostering collaboration and teamwork and driving results through cross-functional teams

Clearly and effectively report on performance and progress against sales plans, KPIs and key milestones

Skills and Qualifications

Seasoned leader with proven track record of growing a life insurance distribution organization

Experience with successfully developing and executing strategic plans

Deep individual life insurance product knowledge

Proven track record of developing and executing strategic plans to drive business growth and success

Highly skilled in identifying latest trends in the life insurance industry, analyzing the competitive environment, identifying external threats and opportunities, and taking action to position the business for long term growth and success

Strong financial acumen, with ability to understand and manage multiple financial indicators around goals, resources and key corporate objectives

Strong leadership, interpersonal and problem-solving skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong interpersonal skills to build productive relationships with external stakeholders

Travel required, estimated 30%+

Bachelor’s degree preferred

FINRA licenses (Series 6 and 26 or Series 7 and 24) required
