The role
As our Head of Production, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll be responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of our Submarine Manufacturing capability at Babcock including welding, manufacturing, electrical, mechanical etc. Leading our teams in the development, planning and delivery of new mission critical products, reporting to the Director of Production.
This position ensures production processes are executed efficiently, on time, and within budget, while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. As a leader you will play a pivotal role in aligning production goals with the company’s strategic objectives, leading the production team, and collaborating with other departments to meet business targets.
Day-to-day, you’ll be working in a low volume, high complexity and heavy manufacturing focussed environment, so the variety of work will be high. You’ll also work on:
Health & Safety: Ensuring that all production processes are conducted in compliance with safety regulations, maintaining a safe working environment for all employees Leadership: Leading, motivating, and developing the production team, ensuring a high-performance and continuous improvement culture Strategic & Planning: Develop manufacturing strategies in line with company goals, pipeline, market trends, and technological advancements Quality Control: Maintaining and improving the quality of products through robust systems and adherence to quality standards Production Efficiency and Performance: Ensuring that production operations meet or exceed planned output targets while optimising resource utilisation Cost Management: Managing the production budget, minimising waste, and optimising cost-efficiency while meeting production targets Production Planning & Control: Lead planning and control teams to ensure effective mobilisation, continuity, order book management and deliver, whilst mitigate risks (e.g. safety hazards, supply chain disruptions, and equipment failures)
This role is full time role, consisting of a 37-hour working week. You’ll role will be predominantly based out of our Bristol, Ashton Vale site but can offer hybrid working arrangements from time to time, dependant on the business requirements. We have an agile approach to work, which is highlighted below.

Essential experience of the Head of Production:
Experience in manufacturing leadership roles, with a proven track record of managing manufacturing delivery, engineering and/or operations Excellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, capable to lead and motivate a diverse team working cross functionally Experience with budgeting, cost management, and capital expenditure planning Strong knowledge of lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies Knowledge of quality management systems, health and safety regulations, and relevant industry standards Strong knowledge of production processes, techniques, and industry best practices Proficiency in production management software and ERP systems – desirable Knowledge in one or more of; complex fabrication, machining or assembly and integration – desirable
Qualifications for the Head of Production:
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in manufacturing, engineering, operations management, or a related field – desirable
