This executive position leads, directs, and manages the business countrywide and is the Enterprise retail leader for Middle and Large Programs. This leader represents The Hartford and is the central point of contact for our M & L Programs agency plant. This position is responsible for the P&L for the Programs business. They lead critical enterprise initiatives and opportunities for The Hartford and participate in OCUO Community of Practice. This role creates an environment which supports and motivates the Captive team to develop expert technical, sales, underwriting and customer service skills.
This role will partner closely with the Underwriting Community of Practice to accelerate the growth of the Program businesses to attain a best-in-class book of business. The ability to collaborate with enterprise field leaders (Regional VPs and Division Executives) as well create strong alliances with Product, Actuarial, Data Science, Risk Engineering/IOT, Claims and Enterprise Risk, and external partners is critical to success in this position. This role will also partner closely with Finance, Data & Analytics and engage other Home Office resources to support underwriting initiatives, quality practices, and learning priorities in the Program business.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Execution:
Leadership and oversight of the Programs underwriting teams (3 direct reports). Underwriting portfolio management at the LOB, Program and unit level. Work in close collaboration with actuarial, claim, OCUO to ensure that rate adequacy is achieved to properly fund the portfolio for profit. Partner with Finance, Claims, Risk Engineering, Actuarial, Compliance, Legal, Operations, IT, and other resources needed to support risk decision making and manage portfolio service commitments Develop and execution strategies for achievement of operating plan commitments (rate achievement, retention, new business and profit)Regularly report out Program financial results to Senior Leadership TeamResponsible for profit, net rate, pricing adequacy, loss cost trends, outlook targets by business in partnership with Actuary and Finance to develop proactive solutions to address varianceOwn efficiency of operating modelOptimize expense ratio by understanding all components of operational efficiencyProduct & Underwriting Leadership:
Develop and execute a new program development strategy including a new program vetting and review methodology within the appetite of MLC and The Hartford. Partner with program colleagues in Global Specialty to ensure consistency of approach to the market. Responsible for establishing and maintaining close partnership with Product and Actuary to inform business and anticipate actions on pricing trends, loss reserve trends, threats and opportunitiesProvide thought leadership and support to product initiativesSteward the portfolio and book of business mix in overall compliance with The Hartford's guidelines, policies, service standards and levels of authority.Build thought partnership to drive product strategy and roadmap, appetite expansion, pricing, and service capabilitiesTightly connected with MLC Underwriting Community of Practice to ensure MLC practices are part of the Captive BU routines, especially the MLC Enterprise CUOPartnership with Reinsurance partners to ensure special acceptance decisions and adherence to treatyDevelop strategies to advance profitable growthDistribution Management:
Drive strategies and practices with specific distribution partners to achieve desired resultsManage relationships with top agents and brokers to maximize HIG market shareBuild strong relationship with top risk management clients to increase retention Support and provide leadership to program specific sales and marketing initiatives; provide direction in the development of specialized external and internal marketing collateralStrategy:
Build and maintain the strategic roadmap for future of the Programs BU.Help create clear vision/plan for the Programs BU. Work closely with all Underwriting Officers in MLC to ensure consistencyBuild thought partnership to drive product strategy and roadmap, appetite expansion, pricing, and service capabilitiesDevelop innovative, customer-led solutionsLeadership & Talent Management:
Provide leadership to Programs team Works closely with partner organizations to ensure clear alignmentProvides education, development, and guidance to further differentiated capabilities, including claims, risk engineering, product, operations and underwriting talentResponsible to drive our roadmap both internally and externally – with goal to differentiate The HIG to grow our businessActive and visible field and industry engagement, including representing The Hartford at various industry eventsChampions UW Culture evolution in Programs BUContinuous Improvement- run/push/oversee across Programs BU. Create and sustain a high performing team through knowing and recruiting the best talent, maximizing the skills, flexibility and potential of the professional staff and minimizing employee-initiated turnover through effective management/leadership. Provide clear direction and communications that support HIG and segment initiatives. Ensure that leaders cascade information and keep employees informed.QUALIFICATIONS
15+ years progressive experience in Commercial Lines P&C underwriting, sales/field management, and supervision; sound financial acumen, understanding of financials and P&L, knowledge and experience with setting and driving an operating plan; track record of setting goals and delivering resultsBachelor’s degree required. CPCU, CIC or other industry designation preferred. This role can be based in Hartford, CT or in our regional office locations. Travel required 2 weeks a month.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
