Head Vocal Coach and Conductor of Opera, Assistant Professor of Music
Location: Binghamton, NY Category: Faculty Posted On: Fri Nov 22 2024 Job Description: The Department of Music at Binghamton University (State University of New York) seeks to hire a full-time, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Music specializing in Vocal Coaching and Opera Conducting beginning on September 1, 2025. The Department offers the Bachelor of Music degree in performance, the Bachelor of Arts (in performance, composition, or musicology), and the Master of Music degree with concentrations in conducting, opera/voice, composition, instrumental performance, music history and literature, and collaborative piano. A constituent member of the newly founded School of the Arts, the department boasts vibrant training programs in opera, composition, conducting, instrumental performance, and jazz. The successful candidate will be a dynamic vocal coach with high-level piano skills and a broad knowledge of repertoire and language with Opera conducting experience at the University or professional level. The responsibilities of this position include: + Serve as Head Vocal Coach for the Voice and Opera program in coordination with the Voice faculty. Provide weekly private coaching to Graduate and Undergraduate performance majors. + Conduct Fall and Spring Opera productions including attending all room staging and onstage rehearsals in collaboration with the Opera Director. Supply supplemental coaching of singers cast in opera productions. + Teach graduate-level Vocal Literature class each semester. + Maintain an active profile in vocal collaboration and conducting (e.g., creative activities, research) that engages the discipline at national and international levels + Collaborate with Voice faculty and Guest Artists in recitals. + A commitment to recruiting students, promoting the opera program and experience with community engagement is desired. + Actively participate in faculty governance, attend faculty and departmental meetings, and contribute to committees at both the departmental and university levels. + Additional areas of teaching may be determined depending on departmental needs and the candidate's specific interests, expertise, and qualifications. Job Requirements: Required Qualifications: + Master's degree or equivalent professional experience with a significant national and/or international profile as a Vocal Coach/Collaborative Pianist. + Thorough knowledge of languages, diction, and operatic and art song literature. + Experience preparing opera performances at the university or professional level. + Record of excellence teaching students at the highest professional level. + Experience teaching academic music courses (e.g., Vocal Literature) as instructor of record. Preferred Qualifications: + Doctorate or ABD status at time of appointment. + Experience assisting and/or conducting opera performances at the university or professional level. + Evidence of leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills.
