The primary responsibility of this position is to manage all aspects the Western Tidewater (WT) Screening Program.  This position will have direct oversight and management of WT screening activities, conducting community screenings, data collection and data entry as well as all required reporting activity. This position will be responsible for the community outreach necessary to schedule, implement and conduct diabetes screenings.  This position will act as a liaison between the investigators, providers, and community organizers.  This position will require local travel and some weekend and evening hours to accommodate screenings. 

 

Additional duties involve serving as an assistant coordinator to other clinical trials and investigator-initiated studies.  This includes overseeing several research studies and performing all aspects of patient contact related to that a study (i.e., recruiting, scheduling, performing all patient tests and completing all required documentation.  Other activities include phlebotomy and processing of specimens, ECG’s, and vital signs. 

Responsibilities

Possess a sound and in-depth understanding of the project that has been assigned as a primary responsibility.

Facilitate diabetes screenings in the community, adding to community outreach and engagement.

Create and implement health educational and informational resources for outreach events and screenings.

Review with the principal investigator and other study staff the inclusion/exclusion criteria, overall structure, and requirements of community screenings.

Reach out to community organizations for scheduling of diabetes screenings.

Order, maintain and transport all diabetes screening materials/supplies.

Conduct diabetes screenings (may include nights and weekend screenings).

Assist in developing and distributing advertisement to attract participation.

Communicate and collaborate directly with medical students/residents who are interested in participating in community screenings and activities.

Review the protocol, informed consent form, and follow-up procedures with potential study subjects. Ensure the subject understands the study and the current approved informed consent form prior to signing.

Ensure adherence to protocol requirements and document protocol exemptions and deviations, as appropriate.

Maintain telephone contact with subjects.

Ensure timely and accurate case report form (CRF) completion for each subject.

Assess and record all adverse events as outlined in protocol and report all serious adverse events to the principal investigator, sponsor’s monitor, primary care physician, and IRB as outlined in the protocol.

Maintain copies of all required regulatory documents in an organized manner.

Contributes to regular study audits, creation of IRB documents, source documents and regulatory documents such as protocols, informed consents, screening forms, etc. and maintain study and regulatory records.

Conduct data collection, entry, and analysis, utilizing software systems such as JMP Statistical Software and Excel.

Perform venipuncture, blood collection and centrifugation.

Conduct EKG, EMG/nerve conduction testing, body composition testing, cardio-metabolic testing and other biometric testing.

Recruit and identify potential research participants for clinical and community-based research studies.

Conduct pre-screens/screenings via telephone and/or in person.

Connect recruits to appropriate study and coordinator.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in science related field is preferred. Prior clinical practice or research experience. Previous experience with clinical research protocols required.  Customer service oriented individual is required. Prior experience in community research outreach programs is highly recommended.  Ability to communicate effectively with potential participants of varying ages, ethnicities and sociodemographic background.

 

VA driver’s license required. Must be insurable by EVMS’ insurance carrier.

It is the policy of Eastern Virginia Medical School, (EVMS) that all EVMS owned vehicles be will be operated by authorized drivers for EVMS.  New employees whose positions include driving an EVMS vehicle as one of their job requirements, or a current EVMS employee whose position or job requirements change to include driving an EVMS vehicle, will be required to become an EVMS authorized driver.
