The HEPP Internship Program is designed to provide work opportunities and practical learning experiences in public health, policy, planning, and research, with an emphasis in health equity and place-based primary prevention. HEPP’s Mission To advance health equity, we engage, educate, and empower multi-sector partners and communities to collectively facilitate policy, systems, and environmental transformation. Examples Of Duties Internship Overview: Health Equity Intern The Health Equity intern will support the work of the Health Equity Team contributing to internal and external equity infrastructure building. More specifically, the intern will work on any or all of the following tasks: + Using a health equity lens, support the development of engaging and culturally relevant social media and newsletter content + Collaborate with interdepartmental stakeholders to collect, analyze, and report on data on equity initiatives + Continuing to build a repository of equity resources and tools + Developing and facilitating equity trainings, as applicable + Assist in the development of materials in response to community and internal requests and needs + Participate in any relevant community and internal meetings Qualifications The ideal candidate will have: + Strong analytical and writing skills + Background in Public/Global Health and Health Equity frameworks + Understanding and knowledge of key issues affecting public health and equity + Interest and dedication to advancing health and equity demonstrated through work experience and/or personal experience having been adversely affected by health inequities + Experience working directly with communities centering cultural humility and a racial equity lens + Experience using Canva or other visual graphic technologies + Some experience or knowledge of data collection and data analysis for quantitative and qualitative research + Strong organization and time management skills and ability to work independently toward excellent work outcomes Eligibility + Current graduate-level students and recent graduates from graduate programs focusing on Public Health - up to one year after graduation date – are eligible to apply. You may not be a current San Mateo County employee. + Successful applicants will possess a deep passion for addressing health inequities and experience working to change them. Relevant experience may include: + Personal or family experience dealing with inequitable economic, social, health and educational systems and environments. For instance: being the first in your family to attend higher education, growing up in a low-income neighborhood, experiencing housing/financial instability, or facing racial/ethnic or other types of discrimination. + Professional experience in programs that promote equity (this can be through a multitude of intervention types and variety of locations or organizations). Internship Term & Pay This HEPP Internship program cycle runs from June until December 2025 (flexible – not to exceed 1020 hours). The intern must commit to working between 32 - 40 hours per week during the summer. There is flexibility as the intern’s schedule allows with the Fall Semester if applicable. Reasonable timeframe adjustments can be negotiated. The position will be hybrid with availability to attend in person meetings within San Mateo County. Current graduate students are paid between $29.21 and $38.96 per hour depending on experience.
