Health Information Management (HIM) Technician (Full Time, Towson)

General Summary:

Under general supervision and following established policies and procedures, monitors the quality and compliance of medical record and document management, and oversees chart reconciliation of discharged patients. Trains HIM staff in the processes of prepping, scanning, and indexing into the OneContent optical imaging/archival system. Troubleshoots problems in OneContent and the SCM (Sunrise) electronic medical record, and interacts on a regular basis with Information Systems staff on system issues. Provides thorough audits of open and closed records and communicates identified deficiencies to medical staff. Represents HIM on the Forms Management Committee. May provide HIM coverage at the Ellicott City location as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Work requires written and oral communication skills, knowledge of word processing and computer software applications, the ability to file and type at acceptable levels of speed and operate office equipment – acquired through the completion of a high school education. Health Information Technologist (HIT) certification with a two-year degree in Health Information Technology is strongly preferred. Work requires 2 to 3 years’ progressively more responsible medical record experience with HIM practices and policies and HIPAA regulations. Completion of a two-year degree in Health Information Technology can substitute for two years of medical records experience. Work requires analytical skills to effectively audit medical records for compliance, edit transcribed documents, create tables, reports and logs, and summarize quality monitors. Work requires interpersonal communication skills sufficient to assign workload in absence of manager, train system users, communicate problems to technical staff and audit deficiencies to medical staff, and seek resolutions. Work requires attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and ability to concentrate for periods of time on records review.
