Position Summary This position will be responsible for protecting people and the environment from radioactivity, serve as MSUs EHS contact and representative for the Grand Rapids Innovation Park, and assess potential environmental impact and ensure that MSU facilities and space comply with federal regulations. This position will assist other professionals in designing facilities and radiation-control programs; Review and recommend radiation safety measures; Provide guidelines and regulations on suitable radiation control programs; Assist in selection, purchase, and maintenance of radiation protection, laboratory, and detection equipment; Work with other safety groups to achieve a comprehensive and compliant safety program; Review radiological monitoring data; Assure safe use of radiation sources at all levels; Ensure radiation exposures are as low as reasonably achievable; Recommend to management new methods and equipment for use in radiation work and remedial measures for problems; Provide training programs for radiation workers and other staff; Report on radiation safety and health developments to management; Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures; Assume designation of acting Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) during absences of the RSO; Assist in the comprehensive development, implementation, and management of EHS safety disciplines. Minimum Requirements Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Health Physics, Medical Physics, Physics, Nuclear Engineering or a closely related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in health physics; institutional radiation safety management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired Qualifications One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience including: + Tracking of authorized users & use locations + Radioactive Sources & Radioactive Waste/Equipment + Monitoring exposure to the public and occupational workers + Tracking and maintaining exposure to radiation and releases to the environment ALARA + Providing effective training + Monitoring compliance with all applicable regulations and license conditions + Performing laboratory setup and laboratory decommissioning + Assisting the activities of the Radiation Safety Committee A bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Medical Physics, or other applicable science degree; Masters Degree in Health Physics or closely related field; Three to five years of specialized experience with one or more of the following: + Research particle accelerators + Commercial particle accelerators + Animal nuclear medicine + Human nuclear medicine + Radiochemistry + Bench research + Low level radioactive waste management.
