The role
As a Health Physics Monitor, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You will have the opportunity to develop your career with Babcock, advancing your knowledge and experience whilst providing support to our Health Physics team by monitoring radiation levels on submarines and in controlled radiation areas at HMNB Clyde.

 

Day-to-day, you’ll carry out monitoring duties in compliance with all Company Safety, Quality and Environmental and ensure that assessments of risks are carried out which lead to safe working attitudes and practices.

Carry out workplace radiation and contamination surveys including written survey reports.

 

Provide a monitoring service for personnel, materials, and waste before release from any controlled area in accordance with written procedures to establish radiation dose rates and contamination levels. Carry out decontamination actions. Provide a collection, delivery, processing and disposal service for solid radioactive waste and components, assist in the supply, and return of liquid effluents, and assist the processing of radioactive liquid effluent in accordance with approved procedures. Provide radiation protection briefs to advise on Radiation Protection control measures and Local Rules key working instructions. Maintain radioactive waste and component records to provide a fully auditable trail. Please note that the successful candidate will be required to pass a targeted medical questionnaire and/or medical examination as a condition of employment for this role. This position involves working in confined spaces. Candidates must be able to work comfortably and perform tasks in restricted spaces. 

 

This role is full time, 36 hours per week and is based on site at HMNB Clyde, Faslane, Helensburgh, Argyll, and Bute. Core working ours are Monday to Thursday from 08:05 until 16:45, and Fridays from 08:05 until 12:05. 

 

Essential experience of the Health Physics Monitor 

Experience of working in a role with a strong focus on Health & Safety.  Ideally knowledge of Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, Environmental Authorisations Scotland Regulations 2018, HSE, Safe Systems of Work, COSHH and Risk assessments. Excellent interpersonal and team working skills with the ability to work alone when required. Ability to demonstrate attention to detail and a focus on producing high-quality work to meet rigorous acceptance standards.

 

Qualifications for the Health Physics Monitor 

NVQ Level 2, City & Guilds Level 1 or Royal Navy equivalent MASM level 1 in Radiation Protection advantageous but not essential. Full UK Drivers License

Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
