We are looking for a Health & Safety Intern to join our Electric Division for a 4-month term. The position starts in May 2025 in Edmonton, AB.

Co-op/Internship Requirements (General):

Enrollment in a Health and Safety Diploma or Degree co-op (or internship) program from a recognized post-secondary. Excellent computer skills and experience working with the Microsoft Office Suite    Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner, using appropriate technical vocabulary    A valid Class 5 driver's license

Description:

The Health & Safety Intern supports compliance with and the quality control of health and safety related policies, processes, and procedures. The position will also be responsible for providing support and guidance in the implementation, maintenance, and improvement of the Health & Safety Management system. Additional responsibilities of the role include conducting site visits, supporting incident investigation, driving continual safety performance improvement, conducting inspections and audits, reporting findings and monitoring completion of the identified improvement opportunities.  Demonstrating ATCO values and displaying a positive safety attitude is an expectation of this position.
 

Typical Duties:

Under the guidance and mentorship of a Qualified Advisor:

Support employees in implementing and complying with HS Management System and applicable OHS regulations. Support health and safety performance through collaboration with operational teams Review and implement prevention action plans, procedures, and policies. Assist with development of control mechanisms to ensure the implementation and effectiveness of our HS procedures Conduct worksite observations and formal planned inspections Support incident owners in investigations, both internal and third-party contractors external, including to ensure causal analysis, preparation of reports; incident summaries and management follow up.  Ensure incidents are accurately entered into IMS. Support auditing compliance. Assist with the necessary coaching interventions and follow-ups during inspections. Participate in on-site project startup meetings with crews and provide support with project hazard assessments, project execution plans and project ERP’s Attend safety meetings for area of responsibility, support delivering key messages. Attend and participate in scheduled mandatory training, non-technical training, and Health & Safety training. Knowledge of safe construction techniques and processes.

Role may be exposed to severely disagreeable conditions such as extreme changes in temperature or weather  Travel is required, including occasional overnight travel.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in an Occupational Health and Safety Diploma or Degree program from a recognized post-secondary institution. Asset to hold a trade certificate (Electricity related) Knowledge of OHS Act/Regulations/Code, CSA Standards, other legislative requirements, industry standards, and best practices.  Experience with Incident Causal Analysis. Excellent interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to establish strong collaborative working relationships in a team member role. Ability to influence and collaborate with management, staff, and contractors to achieve improved safety behaviors in a non-confrontational manner. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to be able to identify and offer creative solutions. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook. Valid Alberta driver’s license (Class 5).
