Duties Description The staff members designated as Health System Specialist I FD are licensed funeral directors with experience in the death care industry. While the delegation of duties by the Director may be specific to the individual staff person, all permanent staff are expected to be able to perform any required function of the Bureau.• Receives a variety of telephone inquiries by the general public, funeral industry practitioners, and other agencies and responds or refers the caller to another agency if appropriate.• Refers potential violations to the BFD Director for further action.• Monitors the program email BML for inquires, database updates, and licensing issues.• Processes incoming mail.• Handles routine correspondence.• Processes incoming student registration applications, residency applications and database change applications.• Assists in the processing and mailing of biennial registration applications for firms and licensees.• Assists in applying for the appropriate mass mail and printing permits for in-house printing and mailing of registration applications.• Prepares and collates returned registration applications in batches in accordance with the Policy and Procedure manual for further processing.• Assists in the mass printing of licensing documents for each biennium.• Prepares and mass-mails completed biennial documents.• Prints and records licensing and registration documents.• Maintains funeral firm and licensee information in the BFD database.• Assists in the administration of the Funeral Directing Law Exam.• Other duties as delegated by the BFD Director.
Minimum Qualifications Permanent Transfer Candidates: Current NYS Department of Health employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent, competitive, status as a Health Systems Specialist 1 (Funeral Directing) and eligible to transfer under NYS Civil Service Law.Non-Competitive Candidates via NY HELPS: Possession of New York State license and current registration as a funeral director AND three years of professional experience developing, implementing, and monitoring health regulatory and surveillance programs to ensure that healthcare services and facilities meet professional standards of practice, appropriateness, and quality, and comply with laws, rules, and regulations; observing and evaluating patient and resident care; investigating and making recommendations regarding facility licensure and/or certification; applying enforcement actions and monitoring corrective action plans; and developing, implementing, and evaluating health policies and procedures.Preferred Qualifications: • Candidate must be a licensed New York State funeral director, with a current registration with the New York State Department of Health. • Candidate must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and other basic computer programs, and be comfortable with printing, scanning and other file applications. • Candidate should have work experience as a licensed funeral director, with management experience preferred, and be comfortable dealing with complaint calls and funeral industry inquiries. • Candidate should have familiarity with Public Health Law, Article 34 and the regulations governing funeral directing in New York State.
