Summary This position is in the Nutrition and Dietetics Department of Northern Navajo Medical Center. Nutrition care is delivered to hospitalized patients on medical, surgical, obstetrical, pediatric, and intensive care units. The incumbent will serve as a Health Technician whose responsibilities focus on nutrition screening and meal service for delivery of medical nutrition therapy for hospitalized patients. The incumbent also provides simple education on non-therapeutic diets to patients and staff . Responsibilities This position is being re-advertised to solicit additional applications. Screen the nutrition risk of hospitalized patients on inpatient wards to determine the degree of need for nutrition intervention. Interpret the diet order using approved references and modifies individual menus to comply with the diet order while incorporating individual patient preferences and cultural traditions. Monitor the quality and accuracy of food service to hospitalized patients during tray-line. Serve as a liaison between the patient and the Clinical Dietitian(s) or health care team for issues related to nutrition care. Communicate results of nutrition screening, diet order, and other pertinent diet information obtained from the patient to the Clinical Dietitian. Promote service excellence through monthly patient surveys, patient visitation to determine acceptability of meals and services delivered. Communicate effectively between members of the food service team and health care team. Communicate meal service-related data of immediate concern to diet staff. Documentation such as nutrition education provided in approved templates for Electronic Health Record. Develop meal cards/menus, snack listings, and prepares routine paperwork for patient diet cards, diet trays, and reports. Participate in ongoing monthly reports and performance improvement activities based on the service units established criteria and guidelines. Counsel patients on simple diets, adapting the diet to the patient's cultural and personal preferences. Communicate effectively with the Clinical Dietitian(s) to receive guidance and recommendations on diet orders, menus, and nutrition education. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Education and Training GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: One (1) year of specialized experience that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: Ability to translate diet orders into therapeutic meals, provide group or individual diet education, knowledge of guidelines for meeting nutritional needs across the age spectrum. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
