Heat Plant Supervisor

The University of Virgina is seeking a Heat Plant Supervisor to join the Energy and Utilities team of Facilities Management. The Supervisor oversees the daily operation of complex plant systems and equipment which provide hot water and high-pressure steam for University consumption. Engaging directly with staff in the performance of critical services, this role ensures all environmental regulations are met and heating products are delivered safely, efficiently, and reliably, in accordance with heat plant policy and operating guides. The Heat Plant Supervisor guides staff in maintaining all equipment and systems to ensure optimal condition and mitigate risk to avoid unplanned failures and may escalate complex situations to management for support. This role ensures that fuels are continuously available to the plant and its equipment. Additionally, as valued leaders on the team, the Supervisor may manage the Heat Plant during Manager off shifts and weekends.

Responsibilities:

Lead the team and perform day-to-day operation, maintenance, adjustments, and repair of boilers and associated mechanical equipment. Respond to escalated calls, alarms, and compliance inquiries.

Supervise and support the safe and efficient operation of all environmental emission control systems, ensuring regulatory requirements are met and maintained.

Formulate operating procedures and prepare specifications for repair or maintenance projects.  Responsible for administration, application and oversight of all LOTO, Confined Space, Hot Work, Energized Work and Work Permit systems.

Review operating reports and records received from heating plant operators, forecasts fuel needs and requisitions all materials and supplies to ensure availability of materials and fuels.

Support employee life cycle and HR functions including hiring and onboarding, training and development, performance management, and corrective actions in compliance with applicable programs, procedures, and policies. Address employee concerns, promote engagement, and foster a safe and inclusive workplace culture.

Determine and schedule work assignments, perform inspections of in progress and completed work by staff and contracted personnel, as well as assess and assign project work.

Responsible for coordinating with other plant supervisors and managers in allocating staff for special coverage including but not limited to after-hours, weekend, holiday, and call back work, as well as alternate maintenance assignments during Natural gas boiler operations.

Ensure that performance expectations are clear, well communicated, and relate to the goals and objectives of the plant.

Required Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: 7 years of direct experience in an industrial maintenance and operations environment.  Experience leading or supervising teams is preferred.
Licensure: American Society of Power Engineers (ASOPE) licensure is required within 12 months of hire.

Compensation:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $39.00 - $42.00 per hour ($81,120 - $87,360 per year). Employees new to UVA are eligible for a sign-on bonus of $4,000 for a one-year commitment. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:
