Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Overview ***This position is physically located in the Philippines in support of LOGCAP*** The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) works under the guidance of the Facilities Operation & Maintenance Manager. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) is responsible for the diagnostic and repairs of military/civilian light, medium and heavy wheeled equipment. Troubleshoots malfunctions, and repair, rebuild and maintain heavy equipment. Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantle and reassemble equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, repair or replace parts as required; service, repair, rebuild, overhaul and maintain the aforementioned types of equipment, as well as major assemblies and components of that equipment including engines, transmission, fuel injection systems, hydraulics systems, ignition systems and electrical systems. Responsibilities This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company. Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the outdoors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic condition. Work requires stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolong sitting and occasional working in cramped and awkward position. Frequent exposure to conditions of inclement weather, extreme heat and cold, high/low humidity, blowing dust, and working in confined spaces and at heights. Must be willing to work additional hours when mission requires. Inspects, tests, repair, maintain and operate various wheeled and non-wheeled equipment/vehicles, including 7-Ton Trucks, 5-Ton Trucks, back-loaders, tractors, trailers, pumps and generators to determine equipment serviceability and proper operation. Service equipment with fuel, oil, water, coolant, treats for corrosion, hydraulic fluid, refrigerant, and compressed air, disassembles and assemble malfunctioning accessories and components. Remove, disassembles repairs, clean, treats for corrosion, assemblies and reinstalls components and accessories. Dispose of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all state, local and federal environmental standards and regulations. Operates, cleans, inspects and services wheeled and other equipment for maintenance purposes. Practice good housekeeping, property accountability control, and safety at all times. Additional responsibilities include working with a variety of repair and test equipment including welders, torches, pressure tester and electrical tester to name a few. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Inspect, service, lubricate, adjust, and replace parts, minor assemblies, and subassemblies. This support includes operator checks and services, organic level preventive maintenance checks and service, corrective maintenance to include inspection, identification of discrepancies (fault isolation), submitting requisition requests to approval authorities, installation parts replacement, final inspections and quality control. Perform scheduled maintenance, diagnosis and isolation of previously identified and traced equipment malfunctions, replacement of major assemblies/modular components that can be readily removed/installed and do not require critical adjustment. Functional services required include but are not limited to: Automotive Maintenance and Engineering Equipment Maintenance. In addition, the HEM shall perform routine repair service that includes, but is not limited to, oil changes & lubing; tire rotation; work on brakes; suspension; heat / air conditioning systems; electrical systems; diesel engine repair; hydraulic systems, and other repairs normal and customary for maintenance of Marine Corps equipment. Extensive use of basic shop equipment, diagnostics equipment, hand tools, power tools, air tools, and lifting devices. Steel Toe shoes are required. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in certain areas while work is being conducted. Such PPE includes, but is not limited to: Face Mask, head, foot, hand, vision and hearing protective devices. Periodic use of computer systems and multi-function devices (MFD). Perform troubleshooting and diagnostics with the appropriate diagnostic equipment to identify equipment defects or issues. Identify repair/replacement parts using associated TM for requisition Utilize GCSS-A to order repair/replacement parts Document maintenance actions in GCSS-A Qualifications Minimum Requirements: Education / Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid Driver’s License Valid Class A CDL. U.S. citizenship is required. Able to attain CAC Card. Experience: Approximately ten (10) years’ experience as an electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems maintenance mechanic, and Heavy Equipment or diesel maintenance experience. Familiarity with mechanical diagnostic equipment At least three (3) to six (6) years of experience in Automotive/General Equipment maintenance or an equivalent. Must have experience using GCSS-MC or GCSS-A. Skills: Familiarity with parts and components of complex machinery and engines Familiarity with electronics, reading blueprints, and using diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot repairs Working Environment: Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. Must be able to pull, push and lift up to 50 pounds.
