The City of Moorhead is accepting applications for a Heavy Equipment Operator in the Streets division of the Public Works Department. This skilled trades position performs intermediate work operating various equipment and trucks, performing maintenance and repair activities for City streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and related areas, and related work as required.
**HOURS:** Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm. Day hours. Weekend work only if there is an emergency or snow, overnights every 10th week in the summer and every 5th week in the winter.
**HIRING SALARY RANGE: $25.65 to $27.79 ($53,352 to $57,779) Full Salary Range:** $25.65 to $36.35 ($53,352 to $75,612)
**RAISES:** Employees receive a raise on their anniversary date each year. Plus, this position also receives a 6% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase in both January 2026, and January 2027 per the Union contract.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Operates tandem dump truck, tractor/trailer combination vehicles, skidsteers, motor grader, pay loader, tractor, street sweeper, distributor truck, asphalt paver, steam boiler, snowplow/snow blower, steel and rubber roller, jackhammer, front end loader, and other light, medium and heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and related areas.
+ Performs minor vehicle and equipment maintenance.
+ Repairs, adjusts and replaces manholes and catch basins.
+ Performs snow removal and ice control.
+ Spreads asphalt and patches holes in street surfaces.
+ Assists in installing, maintaining and repairing street signs.
+ Performs buildings and grounds maintenance; picks up debris.
+ Performs other duties as requested.
+ Attendance at off-site courses/trainings/seminars may be required.
**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
To perform the Heavy Equipment Operator successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training required.
+ High school diploma or GED
+ One year or more experience performing construction work, or related field
+ Valid commercial driver's license with Class "B" endorsement
+ Special Boiler License within one year of hire (training provided)
+ Tanker endorsement within one year of hire (training provided)
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES**
The Heavy Equipment Operator requires thorough knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment used; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of equipment; thorough knowledge of department policies and procedures; skill in using assigned equipment; ability to read and interpret maps and engineering drawings; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public
**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS**
The Heavy Equipment Operator requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
