Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic
Summary This position is in the Operations branch within the Division of Administration at the Vale District of the Bureau of Land Management, with a duty station at Vale Oregon. The primary purpose of this position is to overhaul, repair, service, and maintain heavy equipment. Responsibilities As the Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic in this position, you will: Overhaul and perform repairs, services, and maintenance on heavy equipment such as trailers, bulldozers, graders, dump trucks, tractor trucks, excavators, front-end loaders, backhoes, rollers, UTVs, equipment attachments, and similar heavy construction and earth-moving equipment and fleet vehicles in accordance with manufacturers' standards and BLM and General Services Administration (GSA) policies. Other service/repair duties include troubleshooting and identifying causes of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electrical operating problems in various types of heavy equipment, tracing and locating defects, and executing required repairs. This position is responsible for maintaining service records and BLM oil analysis sampling programs for individual pieces of fleet equipment and maintenance of shop supplies and tools. Additional work requires welding of plows, buckets, blades, and structural members, and fabrication of parts from raw stock to perform repairs. Incidental to mechanic work, the incumbent occasionally operates mobile equipment such as front-end loaders, graders, bulldozers, and dump trucks in support of road maintenance operations. Primary location of work is in the National Rangeland Drill Shop located in the Vale BLM District Compound. Duties are primarily shop related, but the nature of the duties require the incumbent to be capable of performing some of the repairs in the field, and will include hours of driving, and extended periods working outside in the elements being exposed to smoke, dust, wind, heat, and cold. Due to the nature of the this position some limited over-night travel away from Vale, Oregon may be required. There are occasions throughout the year where overtime is available, but it is typically on a voluntary basis. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications There is no required length of time of qualifying experience or training. However, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to support the SCREEN-OUT Element of: Your ability to perform the duties of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) Applying knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of heavy-duty systems, assemblies, and parts, including major systems, such as: diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines, supercharges/turbo charged engines to overhaul and rebuild heavy mobile systems and vehicles; (2) Applying knowledge of automatic and manual transmissions and gear reduction systems, including those with torque converters, planetary gears, and more than one gear range to overhaul and rebuild heavy mobile systems and vehicles; (3) Determining how electrical, transistorized, and/or other non-mechanical systems tie in with and affect the operation of mechanical systems; (4) Utilizing electric and gas welders; cutting torches, presses, metal lathes and grinders to make welding repairs; (5) Fabricating simple parts or structural reinforcement; and (6) Utilizing tools of trade including power equipment and electronic test equipment gauges, micrometer, etc. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN-OUT Element above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. Physical Demands: The work of the position requires active physical effort, to include walking, standing, lifting objects up to 50 pounds, stooping, and working in cramped positions. Occasionally, strenuous physical effort is exerted in climbing and carrying and using hand tools in the repair of powered equipment. Manual dexterity is necessary when disassembling, repairing, and reassembling units. Visual and auditory senses are relied upon to coordinate the diagnosis of mechanical failures and the resulting equipment repairs. Working Conditions: The incumbent works in areas that are frequently dusty, dirty, and/or greasy, and is exposed to oils, fuels, solvents, noxious gases, and fumes that could result in burns, infections, and cuts. Works is performed both indoors and outdoors. The incumbent must be capable of working satisfactorily in adverse conditions of cold, heat, rain, snow, humidity, and high insect density.
