The Machine Learning research team at Hewlett Packard Labs seeks highly motivated Ph.D. student summer interns to work on cutting-edge machine learning research focusing on Reinforcement Learning and Large Language Models to bring in significant innovations in the trustworthiness of AI, sustainability, digital twins, complex scientific applications like nuclear fusion, clean energy, sports analytics, and other domains.

As the central research organization for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Hewlett Packard Labs' purpose is to deliver breakthrough technologies and technology advancements that provide a competitive advantage for the company by investing in fundamental science and technology in areas of interest to HPE and getting the resulting technologies ready for adoption into new and existing markets.

The Artificial Intelligence Research Lab focuses on researching and developing technologies, architectures, and software to develop cutting-edge solutions in key areas of Machine Learning, including Large Language Models, and Reinforcement Learning.

This position is for the Artificial Intelligence Research Lab's core Machine Learning Research team. It focuses on complex multi-objective and multi-agent Reinforcement Learning with innovative applications to sustainability at scale, complex clean energy generation, nuclear fusion, and similar complex problems. Much of our research is directed towards the trustworthiness of AI and is focused on LLMs. Our work involves RL-based agentic architectures to evaluate and refine LLMs. This also enables downstream LLM-based applications.

Our work involves multiple external collaborations with premier research institutes, National Laboratories, NIST (AISIC), and universities. This is a unique opportunity to work at a start-up pace within a big company. You will have the chance to work with Machine Learning experts who have made multiple successful products, providing you with inspiration and guidance in different areas from the latest AI research to bring hardened Deep Learning solutions to the real world.

We expect all our researchers, including interns, to provide thought leadership and technical influence both internally and externally to HPE. Your innovative ideas and contributions will be highly valued and will play a crucial role in making them real – contributing along the full range from initial novel ideas to design, development, implementation, evaluation, and technology transfer.

This team publishes in top AI conferences and workshops and has won multiple best paper awards at top AI conferences.

Education and Experience

Pursuing a Ph.D. degree (with significant research and innovation experience) in a relevant discipline (e.g. machine learning, computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, etc.)

Track record of world-class innovative contributions and ideas in machine learning.

Technical Skills:

Experience in deep learning and reinforcement learning research

Experience in developing deep learning software with high proficiency in data structures and algorithms.

Experience in Machine Learning frameworks like PyTorch - required

Strong programming skills and experience with Python

Software development experience in Deep Learning, GPU acceleration, and Model Optimization.

Demonstrated effective communication and collaboration skills

Demonstrated ability for original research papers published in top-tier conferences or journals.

USD Hourly: $41.11 - $93.15
